I have just received the results to my Term 1 Maths (general) topic test worth around 15%. I got 36%, the class average been 59% and the highest been 77%, I went absolutely terrible. But here is my back story:

In the past 5 years of my high school life I chose the path to muck around and not concentrate in class, a terrible decision. Recently though, since the start of Year 12, term one I have chose to change my path and begin putting my head down and getting to work. I have got several compliments from my teachers mostly saying "I have seen a huge improvement in you this term and I want you to keep it up, your going really well and I'm impressed with you."

Well, this whole term I have been concentrating and completing all my work in class (For this example, maths). I have understood everything we have done in class having no problems at all. Still I managed to get only 36%, whereas other kids in my class that do not work at all, talking all lesson, get around 45%.

My maths teacher said to me "Although your mark is disappointing, I have notice a huge improvement in your class work. Don't let this bring you down as I know your capable of getting great marks."

I did not study for the maths topic test, reason mainly been I have never study in my entire school life but I'm willing to change that.

I want to know if I can still get a reasonable ATAR for university. (I'm not entirely sure what course I want to do at UNI)

And should I get a maths tutor?

Please help me.

Thankyou.

Thanks for changing the title, I wish I could just go and study but I'm not use to doing that. It may be easy for you but I find it extremely difficult to even start studying.

Any advice would be great.

Stop making excuses - they never get you anywhere.

Of course you can study, you choose not to, there is no one else to blame but yourself.

Don't get into the mindset that the more I study the better my marks will be either, instead the more efficient your study is, the higher your marks will be.

The past is fixed, you can not change it now, so stop worrying and using that as an excuse to your lack of study habits and put your head down now and achieve your goals.

Somewhat harsh, but it's the truth.

Agreed. If you want a High ATAR that badly you gotta work for it and put more effort than others. But if you do find yourself struggling even though you've placed all the effort and still want to go head off to university then apply for EAS when applying through UAC to go to university.

Please put in all the effort you can ~ its not too late! I wish I put in 200% instead of 150% last year.

Your exactly right, its as if I'm trying to get attention by making up an excuse. Is there anything that gets you in the mindset to study?

The truth hurts but I defiantly admire your honesty.

I'm going to achieve my goals!

Wise attitude. Accept fault and move on! All the best to achieving the ATAR you deserve with the efforts you put in.

For starters, how did you feel after that maths test? Do you want to keep feeling like that? If not, that should be some motivation to study.

Also, trying to start studying is the hardest part (seriously). Once you start studying, it's much easier to continue since you're on a roll so to speak. So just force yourself to study for say 5 minutes, and from then on you should start finding it easier to study. Soon enough that 5 minutes will turn into half an hour and you wouldn't even realise.

Another tip, stay away from all distractions. The common ones are computers, phones etc. However, for me the clock seems to be a distraction, although it may be hard to see how it is. Basically by knowing what the time is, you are conscious of how long you have studied for and thus will probably stop after only a short amount of time, despite having not studied enough to learn concepts.

This may not work for everyone though, but you could always try it.

That is a fantastic point "the clock seems to be a distraction". I find myself always looking at the clock to see how long I have been attempting to study for. Even though you said that may not be my case, I think it may be, I mean if I can concentrate for 2 hours straight in maths (double periods) I defiantly have the ability to do that at home.

They say a habit kicks in after around 3 weeks, so I just need to find the motivation which is the feeling I had after the maths test (*terrible), I never want to feel that again.

I will defiantly try it. Thankyou so much for helping me out.

Really appreciated.

It's a wise choice you made to start studying and best you made this choice now and not later. Trust me, I used to muck around frequently and later had to bare my friends going to university whilst I stayed behind.

Also:
Yes and Yes. You can most definitely get a reasonable ATAR and get into university. A maths tutor could help you immensely, however it depends if you're willing to put the effort in.

Just try your best and don't fret : )

[Edit: Regarding having trouble with studying and getting started; you may want to gain some good study habits and start communicating with the teachers. Don't hesitate to ask for help from them. Study doesn't have to be individual, maybe friends can have a study night with you. I find it easier to learn with colours! Experiment and find what works best for you.]

aww.

you'll always fail on your first try. maybe even on the second, third, and fourth. it's not uncommon. but if you keep your work ethic, you'll get what you deserve.

good luck! :)
