Just add up your HSC marks, seeing as though your ATAR is top 10 units (500 marks), you just add up the mark for the 5 subjects you scored highest in. Your aggregate was 477. Holy shite! last year, for 99.95, the minimum aggregate was 472. Dude! If you got 477, that means the overall cohort this year for NSW is way better than last years!!
ATAR is calculated using scaled aggregates. Last year, the lowest scaled aggregate for 99.95 was 476.2, this year, it is 476.5.

Because of this, you can't use the aggregate of HSC marks as a means of determining ATAR. Now keeping in mind that pretty much every single subject scales down, an HSC aggregate of 477 would be lower than 476.5 scaled.

What this means is that this cohort isn't stronger than last year's and also isn't proof of the Flynn Effect.

EDIT: Ninja'd

IM TALKING ABOUT SCALED HERE MATE

Sorry I dont know in detail how it all works, I just remembered a statistic last year that 472 SCALED hsc aggregate was the lowest for 99.95. and I assumed Official's 477 aggregate was scaled. So based on that assumption I talked about the Flynn effect. forgive me for my assumptions. But the flynn effect is real my friend don't you worry.

O shite yea you're right ManicLion, 472 was unscaled minimum last year. My bad. But then 477 unscaled for Official would then still have 99.95 wouldn't it?

No. That 477 would have scaled down to something lower. This is because everything scales down (check out the scaling tables)

Where did you get that stat?

Before you read, please don't judge me too harshly :D

I scored an ATAR of 82.95... And I'm proud of it :)

I think my school is ranked 341st or something, so I'm just glad I got the marks to get into any bloody university. Therefore... Yipeeee! Uni, here I come ;)

Oh, and I only originally hoped for an ATAR of 67 If I was lucky ^_^

93.9, guess I'm happy with it, despite not getting the 95+ I wanted initially xD
Just a bummer that Visual Arts really pulled me down. Damn scaling!

Ok i kind of recovered from the devastation of getting my most dreaded atar...still cant believe it.

There was once a boy who dreamt of getting 98

He found out today that he got 97.95

The reason this happened is because someone actually got a higher exam mark than you in the actual HSC exam. If all your cohort (class at school) have done exceptionally well in the actual external exam then the mark distribution when they moderate and align the marks (the pool of marks in the external exam) has no where to go. If the gaps have closed significantly in the external exam then there is no where for the group to move. Because you are first there is nowhere for you to move (you keep your own external mark, but receive the top mark from the exam - because your assessment mark and exam mark are different someone had to have gotten a better mark than you in the external exam) - if you got the highest exam mark both the assessment mark and your exam mark would be the same...where people get confused is they think that the marks sent in by the school are the ones used to moderate and align. This is not true - it is the pool of marks gained by the cohort in the external exam that is used - the marks used by the school is for the relative gaps and to compare those against how the class went in the external exam (given that some schools mark harder than others - this allows the marking to be fair against the rest of the state).
I will give you an example:
Student A (rank 1st by 16 marks which you need to half for assessment as 50% of HSC and 50% assessment) - External Exam mark 93
Student B (rank 2nd) - External Exam mark 95
(Rest of cohort get marks in range of 92, 92, 91, 89 in external exam even though they were significantly ranked below first place in rankings submitted by school)

Student A receives - HSC mark 93 and Assessment mark 95 (they take the highest exam mark because they were ranked first) - 93 + 95 / 2 = 94
Student B receives - HSC mark 95 (they get to keep their external mark) and Assessment mark ends up being 94, therefore: 95 + 94 / 2 = 95 (because when they have moderated and aligned the marks, because the marks in the external exam were so close the lower ranked students have no where to go but up, as the board of studies tries to give students marks not take them away from them - the problem is that the student ranked first also has no where to go so they get punished).

Ring your Director of Curriculum and I bet you will find that your cohort did extremely well and that you didn't get the highest mark in the external exam...

Hope this helps...

It sucks I know - at least you weren't done out of a state ranking because of it...

but in his/ her scenario, they had a higher exam mark and a lower assessment mark. if you are coming first then your assessment mark shoud be equal or higher than your exam mark. equal if you get the highest exam mark. and higher if you didn't get the highest exam mark.
