Sorry, but no it doesn't work that way. I have spent hours on Wednesday speaking to BOS - the information and how it is reported on both their website and usually how teachers explain it is ambiguous, to say the least.
If you come first AND get the highest external exam mark then they will be equal. The moderated assessment mark cannot be higher than the highest exam mark - they have to be equal - because they use the marks scored by all the class inthe external exam as the assessment marks. You can't get a higher moderated assessment mark because that is the highest exam mark. If your assessment mark sent in by the school is 92, but the highest external exam mark is 96 (and you got that AND were ranked 1st), then both your exam mark and assessment mark will be reported as 96 (your internal mark has nothing to do with the actual calculation of your marks EXCEPT that they use it as the scale in which to moderate those exam marks - you never actually get your school mark - it is used purely as a reporting and aligning tool (for the relative gaps)...
I know this because the person coming second to me's internal mark that was reported to the BOS was 88 (mine was 95) - but the reportable marks for this student were the ones I stated: 95 (because that was their external mark) and 94 - the relative gap between 1st (me) and second (them) closed to 1 mark because of how well the whole class did. There was nowhere for me to move upwards - I received the top mark in the external exam (95) because I was first, but I only got 93 inthe external exam which is the mark you also keep - hence 94. But because the student coming second got 95 external mark but the relative gap had closed to 1 mark, they beat me overall - sucks bit time, but seriously nothing I can do about it...
Also, because the rest of the class was so far behind me, I emailed my notes to them so that we would all do good (you know like the teachers tell you to do - if the whole class does good then everyone does good) - well that is a crock of crap because I was the only one punished because I didn't get the highest external exam mark (but technically was only behind by 2 marks even though the gap was 7-8)... :(
AND the person coming second to me bagged a state ranking - so IT REALLY SUCKS!!! So everyone else who thinks they have been screwed over by the whole process - GET OVER IT!! I got an ATAR of 98.6 so I am deliriously happy - but I just wanted to make others (especially the kids in Year 11 coming through) of how the whole process really works.
Work hard so that your ranking is high, but really your internal school marks mean shit - if you are ranked first then that is all that matters - but make sure you ace the external exam because that is where all the data comes from... :)

but in his/ her scenario, they had a higher exam mark and a lower assessment mark. if you are coming first then your assessment mark shoud be equal or higher than your exam mark. equal if you get the highest exam mark. and higher if you didn't get the highest exam mark.
^ Pretty much that.

Sabercute, you're... wrong - from what I can tell.

Yes but my Assessment mark was LOWER than my Exam mark, even though I'm ranked 1st. No one has been able to explain this.

Whatever - I know what I have been through - this is a real life example with real life results - if I am wrong then the three people I have spoken to at the board of studies are also wrong. But if I am right then the kids coming through need to be aware of this as they are being misled as to how it really works - I am telling you that the internal marks that are reported have jack shit to do with anything apart from the relative gaps - you will never get your internal mark - whatever the highest mark is in the external exam is what you will get as your assessment mark IF YOU COME FIRST IN BOTH school and the EXTERNAL EXAM.

If your internal mark is 82 but you ace the external exam - the board assumes that your teachers have set you incredibly hard exams or marked extremely hard. So if your external exam mark is 93 your internal moderated assessment mark will also be 93 simply because the board aligns you to the rest of state.

Ring the Board of Studies. It is the only way to sort it out...because yes, you should have had the highest mark as the assessment mark.

But I got a 92 in the EXTERNAL EXAM but I got an assessment mark of 89, yet I am first internally - shouldn't I at least get my own exam mark, if not higher (if someone got a higher mark than me in the exam)?

PLEASE EXPLAIN:
My rank in Advanced English was 1st at my school, with a big gap between me and the next person. My exam mark in the HSC: 92/100 yet my Assessment mark was: 89/100.
How does this happen? I thought being first in a subject meant I couldn't be "dragged down" by my peers? :S
Yeah, apologies - yes you should have had whatever the highest mark was in the external exam (whether yours or not) as your Assessment mark - did they at least report your HSC mark as 92 (cause then it might just be a typo under your assessment column)?

Yes, got grossly excited that I wasn't the only one hindered by the BOS - I was reading yours around the wrong way (I see the columns in my head and just assumed it was the other way around). Also, I just thought I had a kindred spirit that had been screwed over like me. Hopefully yours is just a typo or something - or I will cross my fingers that you get an extra 3 marks!!!

But hopefully my blog has helped some of the Year 11's coming through with how the other way works, and how you can get screwed - I think that sometimes we think because we are ranked 1st we are safe but we most certainly are not. Sorry for the confusion.

Nah it was reported as 91 ( since the average of 92 and 89 is 90.5, but they don't do decimals so it's rounded up).

Yeah thanks for talking me through it anyway, it's good to be able to bounce ideas off people.
And I'm sorry about your mishap.

What? Different scaling? Isn't it simple logic that the lowest 99.95'er had an aggregate of 472 last year, therefore if a 477 aggregate got 99.85, even with scaling (Which has a negligible effect for top achieving students) you won't get a difference like that unless the cohorts highest ranked kids were smarter than before.
oops i didnt read that they got 99.85
