Let me get this straight. So in a particular subject, do you get the hsc mark corresponding to your internal rank? So lets say if the 5th best mark in your school was 80% and you get the best mark of 98%, do you get the 80% instead if you were rank 5th internally? I've heard this been told to me by so many people and it just seems unfair. So basically, if you're rank 1st, you can just sit back and relax during the HSC as you are already destined to get the top scoring mark. :s

I thought it was like your internal mark averaged with your external, and then scaling/aligning is applied to it. :S

NO. You keep 98 as your exam mark and then your assessment mark will be determined on a variety of factors not neccessarily the fifth best place (things like spacing between ranks are taken into account). But anyway, assume you get 80, then your HSC mark is (98+80)/2

Pretty much this.

It is a misconception that you get your assessment mark corresponding to the exam mark of the same rank, because usually it is quite close.

Yeah, this is true, it's usually almost the same but it can range by a few marks. If you get the exam mark for your rank, you'll probably get a decent estimation of your assessment mark.

Dont quote me on this, but i'm pretty sure if you are ranked first or last your internal mark IS the highest or lowest hsc mark respectively. Any other rank is different though, i believe they play around with the averages to maintain gaps or something.

This, first and last internally recieve the highest and lowest external marks from their cohort as their internal marks. The rest are moderated according to internal rankings and the relative gaps between them.

So what about the person that got the highest mark externally? Does he get bumped down to getting the second highest external mark, or do they both get the highest mark? :s

That external mark will be his Exam Mark. His assessment mark will depend on the moderation done by the BoS, but it should be pretty close to the second highest external mark. Or if the distance between first and second is really small, it shouldn't matter.

So if you are like 8% from the person that came first internally then that means your moderated assessment will also be 8%?, even though the external marks is very similar?
