Writing an essay (2 Viewers)

Got our yearlies back, and am awfully disappointed.
I can't seem to get the structure right, ever! We've had over 100 lessons in class on how to write an essay but the lessons are repetitive and never informative.

this is my problem:
-I always skip the thesis, my paragraphs can be really long (for example: if the question is about change i'll highlight techniques before and after the characters transformation- so basically their are 2 ideas in the paragraph, is this wrong?)


and the point of this thread any one who scored well in their essays may i please have a look

My advanced teacher always told that we are expected to find a structure that suits us rather than adopting to a conventional one.
some of my essays have structures that seem odd, but it works for me and ideas in my text.

since you are in year 11, experiment with it.

Oh.. :( We've yet to get our yearly stuff back, we're getting it first week back probably ;-;

I did do Change, but we did an oral for it not an essay and I failed it lol. Because bad preparation and yeah



But essay structure is important for an essay. You need an intro, body paragraphs (not too long, a page at most written) then a conclusion. You do need a thesis, otherwise your essay will be floppy.

And remember it's not about the quantity of words you write, you need to show quality work. Waffling won't get you anywhere in terms of essays

You could try find a private tutor to help with essays for a couple of lessons. That way your needs are met.

hmm that's interesting. Well idk, one essay worked for me then my other one flopped because ideas were bad and intro and conclusion didn't make sense probably o_O

It's a sign you need a private English teacher :) That's the only solution to your problem right now.

The structure depends on the type of essay you are writing (critical/close study, comparative etc).

If you are comparing texts, you needs to structure your essay based on IDEAS.
1. Introduction
2. Idea 1, Text 1
3. Idea 1, Text 2
4. Idea 2, Text 1
5. Idea 2, Text 2
6. Conclusion

If you are doing something like a critical study, something like Hamlet, you do 3 ideas but link it to your thesis.
1. Introduction
2. Idea 1
3. Idea 2
4. Idea 3
5. Conclusion

If you need TWO related texts and you have one prescribed text
1. Introduction
2. Idea 1, Prescribed Text
3. Idea 1, Related Text 1
4. Idea 2, Prescribed Text
5. Idea 2, Related Text 2
6. Conclusion

You can modify these basic structures but ALWAYS make your essay by ideas. Block responses (analysing one text at a time) will automatically lose marks for structure.
