This question isn't probably very common, but can yon guys give a rough estimation? After moderating and aligning what do you guys think will be the final moderated, aligned assessment mark (that appears on the BOS report for school assessment mark)?

Raw internal marks (the one school sends to BOS) for subjects:

Math 2U 81

Eng ADV. 65

Chem. 55

Phy. 62

Bus St. 75

BTW school ranked 88-92.

Can't be done. All schools set vastly different exams and mark differently - both having no correlation with school rank for the most part. No one can even predict what the exams this year will align like until after they've seen the paper.

Internal school marks are irrelevant because they are "moderated" by your school rank...

What matters is where you rank in your subject at your school.

Rank plays no part in the moderation process, except for first and last.

The internal assessment is moderated so that the range of cohort's assessment marks is the same as the range of the cohort's external examination marks, while leaving the relative gaps between marks unchanged.

What matters is where you fit on the scale between 1st and last, and how you expect 1st and last to perform in the external exam.

From my understanding of the process, the total pool of examination marks are pooled (added together) then distributed according to your school rank.

As you said, if you are ranked 1st, you get the top exam mark as your moderated assessment mark and if you are ranked last you get the lowest exam mark as your moderated assessment mark.

I couldn't find anything that specific from the BOS regarding distribution of marks for students ranked in between 1st and last... They only say there is a "normalising process". If you have a link I would interested in reading it.

"What matters is where you fit on the scale between 1st and last, and how you expect 1st and last to perform in the external exam."- Isn't that just a fancy way of saying your school rank?

No, it says a lot more. If your internal assessment is 30% of the way down from the highest to the lowest assessment, your moderated assessment mark will also be about 30% of the way down from 1st to last, regardless of how many people are in front of you or behind you in the rankings.

eg.
Internal marks:
1st 90; Last 40; You (ranked say 50/60) 80

External Exam (after alignment)
1st 95; Last 65

You would expect to get about 89 (20% of the way from 1st to last)

If it was done by ranks alone as you are suggesting, you would get A LOT lower.

(The moderating process is actually done before alignment, but that doesn't affect the logic.)

(Also it doesn't work out EXACTLY as I've described, because all the marks scored by the cohort in the external exam are added together and (roughly) redistributed in the moderation process. Which is why they say that the person with the lowest assessment won't necessarily get the lowest external mark. They break this rule occasionally to avoid distorting the distribution.)

Moderating and aligning are different processes.

Aligning is done to the raw exam marks.

Moderating is done to the internal assessment marks.

Different processes and applies to different figures.

And yes ranks to matter. If you are sent in 5th you will have the 5th best assessment mark in your cohort BUT.... it won't necessarily be the same as the 5th highest exam mark. Your mark will be moderated according to the total marks available for your cohort, determined by the total number of exam marks earned in the exam, the gap between you and those ahead and behind you and your position in the group.

Are you saying aligning doesn't happen with raw school assessment marks (ones school send to BOS)

School marks are moderated to the aligned exam marks.

The raw marks that are sent in are used to determine the ranks and the relative gaps between the ranks and that is all.

After the exam marks are aligned the school's marks are moderated.

For your internals, coming 5th by 2% puts you in a better position than coming 5th by 20%. Ranks play no part in the moderation process, unless you are first or last because they set the bounds for moderation.

You do not just give the nth exam mark for the nth ranked student. The process considers how well you performed throughout the year, not just one assessment (i.e. the HSC exam). If you are close to first, in terms of school marks, you can expect a moderated assessment mark to be close to that of the mark of first place.

How does coming 5th by 2% put you in a better position? You will get the HSC internal mark of the guy who came 5th in the external exams either way and whatever you got in the external exams for the other half (obviously).

No, you won't get the 5th highest external mark as your assessment mark.

No, this is a common misconception. Have a read of the link I posted.

I would have thought that a Sydney Grammar student would be better informed.
