Re: Laptops for university

Specs still will matter; I can't justify the specs for the price, i.e forking out a couple hundred dollars for a computer that can't do much. But thats my opinion.

Re: Laptops for university

You could probably get an Asus/HP laptop with i5 within that price range.

But tbh, laptops are bit of hassel. I switched to an ultrabook, so much more convenient.

Laptops for university

I'm bias. I love apple! I've gotten a MacBook Air for uni (got it for $500 - I wouldn't buy it if it was $1000 - oh and it's new in box guy just didn't need it :p)Simply because I want something small which I can bring along with my notebook & textbook and not feel like my back is going to break.

There are way better laptops with better specs.

I like MacBooks for the general aesthetic & I've been using it for 3 years. So I'm used to it.

Mba... Or iPad with keyboard or surface pro.

Your not gonna get any great laptop for $500 unless you were sold it at a large discount. If you can't afford the mba, the surface rt and ipad are both in that range.

I was lucky to be sold it at $500 - still has warranty and telephone assistance.

Yeah the iPad is pretty good, I used the iPad to do some of my assignments and to take notes during high school.

Re: Laptops for university

TBH most decent ultrabooks are more than a mac, and the mac is more designed to be a 'education' and 'show off' product at the same time. If you can afford the MBA id suggest that, but wait for the 2014 model which is a few months away, or if not, check out that list i put up.

That was always the case when ultrabooks were new due to economies of scale Apple had, but now you can get similarly specced ultrabooks for cheaper than a MBA.

Maybe not the next one, but I suspect the generation after of macbook airs will use an ARM processor - pretty exciting because compatibility is the main problem with other architectures but I think Apple could pull it off. (Unlike MS they arent scared to completely break backwards compatibility and unlike RT it wont flop since Apple dont have to rely on other manafacturers)

Re: Laptops for university

It was that expensive because it was the era when ultrabooks were non-existent, and my laptop became one of the thinnest/lightest in the world at the time. Also you would be hard pressed to find an optical drive in a 13inch laptop, especially one this thin.

Who on earth needs to spend 2k on a uni laptop?? Stupid and a waste of $$ IMO.

Yeah I totally agree - I'm also bias - I absolutely love my 11 inch Macbook air - it's the perfect size, the keyboard and trackpad are fab (these were important factors for me) and it's incredibly speedy. Yes it was $1000 but I love it heaps so I think it's justified.
