Asking this because I go to a decently ranked public school (hey, less than 200 is decent right?) and nobody from my school has ever made it into any medicine programs, and nor do I think anyone will this year (there's only 5 of us doing the UMAT and we're all failing miserable, like 30-50 percentiles). I know it's possible to get anywhere from any school, but I have this theory that parents from the eastern suburbs (and the types to send their kids to private/selective schools) tend to be the type that are more "value-added" parents - e.g. give their kid puzzles when their young, enrol them in different clubs, get them to volunteer, get them to play instruments and make them listen to Mozart (ok maybe not that far :p).

Also, a semi-related question: what is the general admission rate of medicine like? I've heard about 16% but even that seems too generous an estimate lol.

Stereotypes stereotypes everywhere

And 16% probably sounds too high to me. May be wrong though

Mmm yeah and if UWS has so few public school students, we can only assume NSW and UNCLE have close to none (well, not really, but I suck at section I UMAT so what do I know about making conclusions lol).

What do you attribute this imbalance to? (when the majority of students in the state attend public schools)

Look I'm sure genetic factors come into play when it comes to something like UMAT, but there's a good chance it's also heavily impacted by upbringing and environment. All I did when I was a kid was climb trees and play Nintendo 64 like the poor western sydney peasant I am, and I'm sure that has a least something to do with me sucking at the UMAT (I've been studying consistently since January, as in, minimum 3 hours a week doing medentry drills and papers. Still getting 50 percentile).

There's always post graduate medicine. If you're talking about people trying out for UMAT and hence for med it is much less than 16% probably ~3%. If you're talking about offers given out based on preferences I think it's about 16-20%. Most people don't list medicine in their UAC once they haven't received an interview etc.

Don't get me started on parents talk. To be honest I learnt most from self experience rather than parental input. I wished they pushed me more for extracurricular activities when I was younger but much of success comes from within. Undergraduate for you at this point may be difficult but post graduate medicine is definitely a possibility. First and foremost I hope you understand what medicine entails and hope you are fully committed to the career. If you haven't experienced first hand what medicine is, it's not a good career to choose.

dw brah, I feel you, I've been stuck on about 70th percentiles for eons. But randomly I'll have a bit of luck and get like 97th perc. Guess it's really luck sometimes.

Mate, just cos u don't go to a selective or private doesn't mean you won'y get in. In fact anyone from anyone school can get any atar so just study hard and do well. Both of my parents are tutors in unsw and usyd for med and they told that there are people in their classes that came from schools ranked in the 300s, so you should be fine. Also I heard from people that only like 5% of applicants actually get in.
Good luck and hopefully you shall get in :D

are you questioning my empathy :p

Nah, you just need to think like acer. I've heard of nurses and allied health practitioners with 10 years of experience who have failed section 2.. 1/3 of it is about empathy, the rest really isn't

Empathy and emotional intelligence :p

Nah I guess it's not everyone's strong point. In all honesty the first umat paper I ever attempted I got 18/36 in that section lol.
Some of the questions are retarded though I must admit, like the MC options are very close in meaning.

One thing I'm not sure about though, is it a good idea to start doing the papers with the sections mixed? Because I've been doing them separately...

yeah.. defs do mixed papers.. doing drills for specific sections are to improve your skills when dealing with that particular section's questions. However, I think it's really important to do full exams to get your timing right etc because honestly, if you like consciously do the questions as fast as you can and consciously speed read, it really makes a huge difference.. or at least it does for me.. ( I manage to have a good 6-7mins at the end to go back to the 3-4 questions that i've left behind when i consciously speed read)

BUT at the end of the day.. its umat.. Prep doesn't correlate to a good score .. seen people who got 60%ile with a whole year of prep, did it year after with no prep and got 95+

I feel like such a loser when everyone downplays section 3. All I've heard is that it's apparently the easiest to make improvements on, but here I am 6 months later still getting every pick the middle question wrong lol.

Re: People in med programs-have you generally come across any people from public scho

Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. When I was doing it back in the day I was getting 70-80%+ for all sections. I got so good in S3 I was sometimes getting 90+. Then screwed up S3 in actual UMAT, by screw up I mean I thought I did much poorly than online tests. Turned out my UMAT was alright with casual 2 months study. By casual I mean few hours per week.

You really never know until the results come out I mean I thought I was going to get 60-70% for S3 in the actual UMAT but got much higher.

Problem is that I read but Half the time I cant read consciously. What I Mean is that I read the whole passage and then have to read again when I look at questions. I really dont know why this happens? happened to any of you? And when I do drills it takes me 6-7 extra mins cos of this

Sounds like a concentration problem to me. If it is something new to you then I would seek some medical tests to see if anything is off whack. It might be because you don't have an interest in what you're reading.
