what's the difference between domain of R and R+
The former is all real numbers, the latter is only the positive ones (sometimes including 0, so you may need to check the convention used by the author).

y = -√(16-x^2)
Is there a way to find the maximal domain and also the range by inspecting the equation?

Note that -3x + 5 > 0, which means x < 5/3.

Now exchange x and y,

x = √(-3y + 5), y < 5/3

x^2 = -3y + 5, y < 5/3

y = (5 - x^2)/3, y < 5/3

Therefore,

f^{-1}(x) = (5 - x^2)/3, and f^{-1}(x) < 5/3.
