They are in the Teacher's Suites. They are available to the teachers who may at their discretion make the solutions available to the students. They are however incomplete.

You can buy them yourself but are wasting your money if your school will make them available to students for free.

Anyway here are the links if you need to buy them:

Year 11:

Year 12:

I made a list of questions for which the solutions are missing. I haven't looked at this for a while so maybe some of the following may have already been fixed by Cambridge.

Ext. 2 Teaching Suite link:

Most of these Extension 2 ones have now been added except for 3E Q3e and 6G Q17. But they are now available at https://www.angelfire.com/ab7/fourunit/Cambridge-e2-3EQ3e-6GQ17.pdf and that completes the solutions for Cambridge Extension 2.

I will update the lists for Extension 1 soon.

This rather complicated post is to update the list of missing Cambridge Year 11 Extension 1 solutions. As complicated as it is, the end result is to shorten the list and hence make it easier to complete the solutions.

I will make a similar post later for Cambridge Yr 12 Extension 1.

It is a somewhat larger task than the one I did for Extension 2 and so completing the solutions (and for that matter even correcting some too) will take more time and will result in a larger documents.

I have also provided some commentary to the list

Note: Some of these say "cf. Answers" or "cf. ask your teacher"

"cf. Answers" could be an acceptable solution provided one could imagine the question as an exam question and a bold answer acceptable with full marks.

"cf. Answers" is not a solution if a full solution has many steps and a bold answer would not get full marks.

“cf. ask your teacher” is not a solution. Giving the problem to someone else is not a solution. You are not going be able to delegate your responsibilities in the HSC exam so don’t start now.

-------------------

Update to Yr11 Cambridge Extension 1 solutions.

Added:

4C Q7a

6E Q19: "See answers provided in textbook." acceptable in this case

Chapter 6 review exercise Q1 "Use a calculator to find each of these values. Ensure it is in degrees mode." is not a solution - but in this case the cf. answers would suffice

Chapter 6 review exercise Q9: "See page section 6E of textbook." perhaps they mean see page 254 which would suffice

8F Q11, 12: "Cf. answers, no working required." acceptable in this case

9C Q1a, 1b: "No working required, cf. answers" acceptable

9D Q2: "No working required, cf. answers" acceptable

9F Q1-4, 7, 10a, 10b, 10c: "No working required, cf. answers" - acceptable

9G Q1a, Q2b, 2c, 3, 4, 7: "No working required, cf. answers" - acceptable

9H Q6b, 6c, 10a, 11b: "NSFR" presumably means no solution further required (or cf answers) - which would be acceptable

9L Q1, 5, 6, 7: "No working required, cf. answers" - acceptable

11E Q1, 4a, 4b, 4c, 5, 11: "cf. answers" - acceptable

11F Q8c: "cf. answers" - acceptable

11G Q6a-h: "cf. answers" - acceptable

11H Q1, 6a: "cf. answers" - acceptable

11J Q4b, 5b, 5c, 6, 7, 8d, 9a, 9c, 11, 13b, 15, 16: "cf. answers" - acceptable

Chapter 11 Review exercise Q2a, 2c, 2d, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9a, 9b, 9c, 9d, 9e, 9f, 9g, 9h, 13, 17, 18, 22a, 30a, 30b: "cf. answers" - acceptable

13A Q4a, 4c, 5a, 7a, 7d: "cf. answers" - acceptable

13A Q13d, 13f: "cf. answers" - acceptable - just note that the answers in the textbook are incorrectly labelled 13a, 13c but they are actually 13d and 13f

13B Q1, 2, 4, 5a, 10f, 12a, 12b: "cf. answers" - acceptable

13B Q13: "cf. answers" - acceptable - except note that the answer for 13a and 13b have been combined into what is incorrectly labelled 13b

13C Q1, 2, 4b, 6b, 6c, 8c, 10b, 10e, 13, 14: "cf. answers" - acceptable

13D Q1c, 2a, 12a, 14a, 14b: "cf. answers" - acceptable

Chapter 13 Review Exercise Q3, 5b, 9, 10: "cf. answers" - acceptable

Chapter 17 review exercise Q3a

-------------------------

Some are incorrect:

3F Q10b
9C Q5
9F Q6
9I Q2, 9
11H Q6b, 7a, 7b, 7e, 7f, 7g, 7h, 8, 9a
13C Q12a
13D 7a

---------------

So now we finally have a shortened list of the ones still missing:

1D Q8e, 8f, 9e, 9f, 10e, 10f
1G Q6g, 6h, 7
2C Q6j, 6k, 6l
Chapter 2 review exercise Q16, 17, 18, 19

3D Q4: "Tech-only question, no worked solution" - surely a screenshot of a wolframalpha picture would suffice - something they could easily have put into the solutions

3E Q16c
4C Q8e, 8f
7D Q14e, 14g
8G Q12 (project)
9D Q10, 11

9D Q21: "Answers may vary" - is not a solution. If that was a student response in an HSC exam it would get 0. Furthermore, "for discussion" ... really? We must have silence in the HSC exam. Quiet please.

9E Q4 (Note: Their solution which they call 4a, 4b, 4c, 4d, 4e, 4f are actually 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d, 3e, 3f and there is no solution to Q4).

9F Q5, 11: "No working required, cf. answers" - not acceptable. Several steps required. Bold answer probably wouldn't get full marks in the HSC exam

9H Q14 - incomplete and NSFR unacceptable as several steps would be required

9I Q16ai-vi: "Answers may vary" is not a solution

9I Q16bi-bii: "No working required, cf. answers." - unacceptable - several steps required

9K Q9b

9L Q2a, 2b, 2d

Chapter 9 review exercise Q2a, 2b, 2f, 2g, 2h, 7a, 7b

11E Q2, 3: "cf. answers" - except there ARE no answers!

11H Q3, 4, 6c: "cf. answers" - unacceptable - more working required

11H Q7a, Q7b, 7e, 7f, 7g, 7h - cf. answers is not a solution

11H Q12: "cf. answers" - there ARE no answers

11J Q1: "Refer to teacher" - not a solution

11J Q2b: "cf. answers" - unacceptable - more working required

11J Q12a

11J Q13a, 14: "cf. answers" - unacceptable - sketch missing

Chapter 11 Review exercise Q9i: "cf. answers" might have been acceptable had the answer been correct. The answer is incorrect.

Chapter 11 Review exercise Q15

Chapter 11 Review exercise Q23: "cf. answers" - unacceptable - more working required

Chapter 11 Review exercise Q31: "Examine the graphs of 𝑦 = 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥 and 𝑦 = 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑥 to establish the phase changes" and "Examine the graphs of 𝑦 = 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥 and 𝑦 = 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑥 to establish the points of intersection" is not a solution

13A Q13a, 13b, 13c: "Answers may vary" is not a solution

13B Q3, 10, 10b, 10c: "Answers may vary" is not a solution

13B Q10e, 10g: "cf. answers" - except there ARE no answers!

13D Q1a, 1b: "cf. answers" - unacceptable - graphs missing

13D Q2b, 2c, 2d, 2e, 2f, 3, 4a, 4b, 5, 6, 7b, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12b, 13, 14c: "cf. answers" - except there ARE no answers!

13D Q4c - incomplete. All they did was the mean.

Chapter 13 Review Exercise Q12b: "cf. answers" - except there ARE no answers!

14E Q18c

15A Q17: "Students check the answer themselves" is not a solution

----------------------
Here is a more thorough description of the errors in Year 11:

3F Q10b. The solution refers back to Q6a, 6b, 6c. However the question doesn't. 10b has 3 different quadratics instead.

9C Q5:

5a gradient of normal is 1/6 not -1/6

5b answer is correct but needs to show more working

5c The curve, tangent and normal all have the same y-intercept which is 15, so the normal given as y=(1/8)x-15 should be y=(1/8)x+15

5d Normal is x=4 not y=4

9F Q6:

6a - wrong derivative

6b - The normal is not 1/9. The gradient of the normal is 1/9.

9G Q2a - incomplete - however cf Answers may be acceptable

9H Q11c - incomplete - "ANSWERS MAY VARY" for the rest of the question is not a solution. Also the y-coordinate for V is incorrect in the Cambridge solutions.

9I Q2: For none of the questions do the Cambridge solutions answer the second part of the question which is to state any values of x for which the tangent is horizontal.

9I Q2a: Function is (x+1)/(x-1) not x/(x+1)

9I Q2c: Function is (3-2x)/(x+5) not x/(1-3x)

9I Q2d: Function is x^2/(1-x) not (x+1)/(x-1)

9I Q2e: Function is (x^2-1)/(x^2+1) not (x+2)/(x-2)

9I Q2f: Function is x/(1-x^2) not (x-2)/(x+2)

9I Q2g: Function is (x^3-1)/(x^3+1) not (3x-2)/(2x-3)

9I Q2h: Function is (x^2-9)/(x^2-4) not (5-4x)/(5+4x)

9I Q9:

9a: they did not find the normal

9b: they did not find the cartesian equation

11H Q6b: Purported solution to 6b is actually the solution to 6a. No solution to 6b is given

11H Q8, 9a - they didn't solve for x or alpha (note the question is wrong in Q9 because the question says solve for x and the equations are in terms of alpha)

11H Q9b: One of the answers is not correct to 2 decimal places

13C Q12a: "See ‘uniform discrete possibility distribution’ in 11A" - but 11A has nothing whatsoever to do with uniform discrete possibility distributions. 11A is "The exponential function base e". I think they meant 13A. But that is still not a solution. The answer is 1/n.

13D 7a: sigma=sqrt(17.901-3.441^2) not 17.901-3.441^2

7B Q15: There are no graphs on page 321 of the textbook

12E Q3a: Question says show that. No working is shown

13A Q1c: This was probably a mistake in the question which is first-order. The equation in the solutions is a different equation

13A Q3c: This follows from Q1c and the answer for the equation in the textbook is one arbitrary constant.

16D Q11: "The answers are the same when questions are solved using technology." - No they aren't. In particular 16D Q4ciii, 4civ and 7cii are the same as Cambridge Advanced Year 12 10D Q4ciii, 4civ and 7cii which give different answers using technology.

Should I just put the worked solutions in the resources tab or would that be illegal. My ‘Anarchist cookbook’ unfortunately got taken down.

I think the most up-to-date Cambridge Extension 1 solutions are best sourced from the links I previously posted:

and

This is for more practical reasons rather than legal.

Other versions elsewhere on the net are most likely out-of-date.

As I said previously one need not buy them, but the teachers can redownload them if need be to get the more up-to-date versions from those links and Cambridge allow teachers to provide them to students free-of-charge if they deem it appropriate to do so.

This of course does not preclude you from posting up your own solutions. I would especially encourage this for the ones that are missing or incorrect. As you can see in my previous post the list is still quite large and I would appreciate any help in reducing it down further.

The corrections to incorrect Cambridge solutions to the Extension 1 Year 12 textbook are now at http://www.angelfire.com/ab7/fourunit/Cambridge-y12-e1-sol-cor.pdf

and together with the Year 11 corrections at http://www.angelfire.com/ab7/fourunit/Cambridge-y11-e1-sol-cor.pdf this further reduces the size of the list. However it is more manageable if they are now split into 2 styles of questions: non-investigative and investigative.
