Hello Bored of Studies users,

I am a year 11 student who is doing my prelims soon and I would like any opinion on what i should drop in year 12. The subjects I currently do are:

Math Ext 1
Chemistry
Physics
Legal Studies
English Advanced
Modern History

My contenders are Legal and Chemistry. Firstly, my legal teacher is so bad, she gives us 25 page booklets and expects us to do it in like 3 days, she gives so much essay homework, and she doesn’t even teach well, she just gives us work and makes us do it on our own. Also, this content is a little interesting but its my class, they don’t even try to do anything. I swear its degrading my mental health. :(

For Chem, the work is ok, but my teacher again is kinda mid. She just puts vids on that tells us what to do and doesn’t explain it. Also, the work is a little interesting but it can get very boring at times. Also, there is a lot to memorise and i know year 12 gets a bit hard.

I am ranked i think 2nd or 1st in legal (haven’t got marks back), but idk what rank i am in chem.

Im thinking to drop legal, but then whenever i think abt dropping legal, i tell myself ill drop chem and vice versa. If anyone has any opinion, I would love if you could share.

drop legaldrop chem
  • mid teachers exist in every school and its not impossible to do well despite a mid teacher however your legal teacher sounds like a nightmare. you can cope with a teacher that is passive by self studying but your teacher is not considerate of the fact that the other subjects you do have work too
  • I swear its degrading my mental health. :(
  • don't drop chem bc the content gets harder in y12, almost all subjects will get harder in y12. even if the content of legal is easy, chances are you will be marked harsher and therefore the quality of your work will have to be better than it is in y11.
  • you wont have time to do that 25 pages of hw in y12, how will you cope with work from other subjects
  • even if you're ranked a bit lower in chem there is still a chance for you to be better in y12. especially if you are dropping a subject you will have more time to work on chem
  • also chem does not have a lot to memorise especially in comparison with legal idk what you mean
  • you're ranked great in legal, are you just as good in chem? y11 marks are not an accurate representation of y12 marks so you should only be worrying about this if you are getting below average marks
  • chem can be hard to cope in if you already take content heavy courses and dont have time to put effort into chem
my personal opinion: you should drop legal, but only if you think there is no way you could do well in it even after dropping legal and getting more spare time.

i'd probably say drop legal if it is taking that much of a mental toll on you and if the teacher is not giving you enough support. even if your rank in chem is not as great, dropping legal can get you more focused on improving it.

Chemistry is really not content heavy - very little to rote in comparison to legal or modern, its just conceptually a bit difficult. If you find the pnah or peak notes online and do the strive books and past hscs, you'll be able to do great. Source: was my schools first chem band 6 in over a decade and i just didn't pay attention in my classes because my teacher didn't know what he was doing.

Ranking 2nd or 1st is great! Congratulations on your efforts so far!
But may I ask which school you attend? If it is a lower ranked school, coming 1st or 2nd doesn't really say much because at the end of the day you are competing with the rest of the state. Just wanted to be clear I am not undermining your achievement so far! Just my opinion on the topic if you are concerned about letting go of the 1st/2nd ranking :)

Alongside the others who have replied earlier, I also think you should drop legal instead of chem because you need your mental health intact for all the other subjects! Remember, HSC is a marathon not a sprint!
