    Minoan confusion

If you are doing two ancient societies, whichever one you answer on in Section II of the paper, you must answer on the OTHER one in Section IV. It makes sense to look at both sections before deciding which one to do as an essay (Section IV) and which to do as short answers (a) -(e) (Section...

is there a certain amount of entries needed for the process log???

    >>>it's way too late to be getting people to do this! I entirely agree, classics_chic - and I've seen very good logs that were much, much shorter than 200 pages. The usual length would be in the 8-30 pages range, & its very possible to do a respectable log at that length. I was just...

is there a certain amount of entries needed for the process log???

The best process logs are where the student uses the log to really develop their thoughts and arguments on the project & its historiography. I've seen logs that are more than 200 pages long, chock-full of thoughts, ideas, reflections, notes for further research, theories, musings on...

    John Warren

    >>>Anyway, good to have a rigourous argument every now and again... thanks! Agreed, classics_chic - thanks for the workout! I will happily agree that historiographers may be historians too. I've heard Dr Hughes-Warrington (in lectures and seminars) use the word "historiographer" in the...

    John Warren

Here's another one: Lorenzo Veracini, a lecturer at the School of Humanities, Griffith University, Brisbane, writes: As a comparative historiographer, I want to draw attention to a debate that presents some notable similarities, to highlight the risks involved in relying on a strategy of...

    1. There is an "h" in the Ancient Greek language. It's represented by a reverse apostrophe mark (aspirate) representing an initial "breathing" or aspiration. It is tranliterated into English - as I did - as "h". It gives us words like Historia, Herodotus and Hellas. I do have the OED at home -...

I see that DR Noel Weeks also seems to have signed a petition which states inter alia Every student... should look to Jesus Christ as one of the great figures of history. His claims to be the Son of God bear up under the closest scrutiny...

    >>>it's not in the Shorter Oxford Dictionary- it would be if it existed You're having a laugh, aren't you? The Shorter Oxford Dictionary is considered to be "popular" & light-weight - hardly an arbiter of the existence of academic words. Whether a word is in it or not is no test whatsoever...

    votive offering

"Labrys" means double axe, whether as votive offering, full-sized object, or outline carved in stone.

There is indeed such a thing as a historiographer, as a quick google will demonstrate. History Extension students are Apprentice Historiographers.

Would you mind assessing my Major Project????

Acid is right. This is from the marking criteria set by the syllabus (page 33) for the History Project: In response to the precise research question(s): • presents a sustained and coherent argument • supports argument through detailed coherent analysis and evaluation of significant...

Would you mind assessing my Major Project????

Even in Ancient & Modern History you should look at the historiography where relevant: discuss & evaluate evidence, interpretations, & so on. Straight narrative won't get you up there.

    The Problem of Pamela Bradley

Well there are text books & text books. Scullard's "From the Gracchi to Nero" is a serious academic survey of the period. Bradley's book is aimed directly at HSC students. How about "Indiana Jones Discovers Ancient Rome"? That's a "textbook" too. I dare you to quote it in the HSC!

    Anyone doing Cleopatra?

The questions have to relate fairly closely to - - sorry! - - the bullet points in the syllabus.

    IRP Evaluation

I should have said in my last post that I thought your synopsis & source analyses were spot on in doing their jobs properly too. The essay is competently written too in a good prose style, very readable, with sophisticated (but not "show-off") vocabulary. In fact, how the #$!*&^#@! did you lose...

    IRP Evaluation

I enjoyed reading this because it reflects my own interests (Red Alert, Command & Conquer; The Rise of Empires). But I also think it's a very good History Extension essay because the essence of its discussion is the historiography of the topic. As you discuss the topic you integrate a...

Would you mind assessing my Major Project????

I agree with Sarah. I'm not saying you will not get a good mark, but to get the most out of the IRP you need to grapple explicitly with historiographical issues, at least to some extent. So it's good to have some variety of issues or interpretations or perspectives, or at least something that...

    proposal??

And this from the History Extension Support Document: Documenting the Project The Proposal As students conduct their research and develop the appropriate methodologies they should be entering the appropriate details in the proposal. Some of the key aspects which could be included in...

    proposal??

Ummm... you're supposed to have done the proposal months ago before you started the IRP. Here's what the syllabus says: Part II: History Project Percentage of course time: 40 % Students learn historical skills of: • developing a proposal for a historical investigation • locating...
