I think you treat it as (1 + (x + 1/x))^5, then expand at for (1+x)^n.

For gods' sakes, for some reason I couldn't do the similarity question in 5 inside the exam: I walk out, someone points it out, and the answer suddenly becomes blindingly obvious (grrrrrr). On the other hand, the questions later in the paper posed no big problem.

For the fish question (I believe 9 c) ii)), the value to minimise E is v = 3u/2, I think.
