Doing more than two prescribed texts and two pieces of related material is madness, unless you've got either a very conscise style or incredibly quick writing hand. For crime, I'm doing Anil's Ghost, Skull beneath the skin, The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, and an episode of CSI.

With 90% of the internet still using IE, this is reasonably important, wouldn't you say? To the original poster, I'd just stick with a decent quality jpeg compression. It's difficult to go wrong with, unless you really need fancy features or losless compression. flamearrows

Think the bottom line, Sasha, is to go out and buy some generic PC3200 DDRRAM. Unless you're running world simulator in your spare time, 1gb is the maximum you should need for anything, and if you stay away from high-end games (bf2, anything on Source engine) 512 should do you just fine.

Still faster. Last top of the line machine I built (alas, not for me) included the Corsair PRO chips, firstly for the speed and secondly for the reliability. Sasha, DDR PC3200 sounds like your best bet. Casmira, it shouldn't really matter about the CPU... the only thing I can think of...

Sorry for overcomplicating the issue :) Check your motherboard documentation, see what's the maximum speed supported, buy it. Other things, like the latency timings mentioned earlier are only for us hardcore geeks with money to burn :) flamearrows

But don't let this decieve you. DDR2 is theoretically much faster, but the typically slow latency timings usually result in only slightly better performance than DDR. The very fastest RAM (Corsair XMS3200PRO currently if memory serves) is, as you see, DDR not DDR2. flamearrows

I DO have special considerations :) Trust me when I say that it is utterly overrated, and doesn't give an advantage. Try typing your practise essays with no autocorrect, spelling and grammar checking and on a 7 year old laptop. Now come tell me that typing is quicker :) flamearrows
