Poll: Would you drop english if you could?

At the start of the year, I would have said yes, but I have a really good teacher so not any more. I agree with English being compulsory anyway.

Whoa this is something new...ok i have a question

You are more likely to get a question about a theme than about a single emperor, I think, although last year there was a "Evaluate the contribution of Augustus or Claudius as princeps".

Whoa this is something new...ok i have a question

I group it by features, eg. "Relations with the Senate", and then go through all the emperors. Although obviously Augustus always has the biggest section.

I go to selective so academic achievement is generally respected. It also depends on whether you really are a tool, or if you can be modest about the whole thing.

Is it fair that the future of an austrailan is born before they are?

Also, selective schools are public schools. We don't get extra resources (if we do, not much extra) and so I don't think we're really advantaged in any particular way. Selective schools get better results because they have brighter students; if you looked at "value-added" through high-school...

    Essay questions [and] Greece

Possibly things like -reform -development of the position of princeps in terms of power, control of state affairs (ie. later emperors assumed more direct control), relations with the Senate -imperial policy

    Some Study Questions

Possibly areas which contain power-plants, sulfide ore smelters etc. or regions with high sulfur-content coal would be more prone to acid rain.

    Cuban Missile Crisis!

Yeah I think you're right, I don't actually do modern so you would know best... Indochina is a whole separate area of debate within the JFK case study anyway, so I don't think it needs to be related to the missile crisis (ie. the situation in Indochina didn't have a huge effect on the crisis...

    Cuban Missile Crisis!

Well, not really... the missile crisis was October 1962. There were US advisors in Vietnam from 61 but war was not declared (ie. Gulf of Tonkin Resolution) until August 1964, and US troops did not arrive until March 1965. So I wouldn't bring Vietnam into it, it's probably best left as a separate...

Basically, start with an introduction telling which areas of debate you'll discuss, some general comment about reinterpretation and, if the question includes a quotation, link to it. Then go into discussing your areas of debate, the question will probably ask for two. It is important to discuss...

    USYD Scholarships

All the undergraduate scholarships are assessed by the faculties... ie. the heads give each faculty a certain amount of ug scholarships they are allowed to award, and then the faculties give them out in whatever way they think is best (like arts probably pays more attention to public speaking...

Where will you be going to uni?

Surely the vast majority of people will be going to either Sydney metro or Newcastle, just because more people live there.

    HSC results via sms

I wonder if they bother to increase their server capacity so that the website doesn't slow down to a crawl... SMS might be better. I think everyone gets the letter as well, a few days later.

    practise answer for Q1

I agree with max in terms of not making it overcomplicated. Making a response "complex" and "sophisticated" doesn't mean it has to be confusing and full of Latin. I had to read that introduction a few times before I got it, which is not the sort of thing a tired marker wants to be doing. I think...

    JulioClaudians

I agree with Caratacus; additionally, one of last year's questions was "Explain how Augustus gained and maintained his constitutional position" (roughly), so it is far from certain that there will be another question on this exact topic again.

hey anyone else doing imperial rome or is it just my school?

The syllabus actually requires that you cover at least three out of Rome, Greece, Egypt and the Near East over the preliminary and HSC courses. From memory, Augustus and the Julio-Claudians is one of the most popular historical periods. I do all three of those topics (Augustus, Roman Society...

    Keep it or Lose it

I think the guy is saying he wants the best for his girlfriend, and he thinks that being with him isn't the best (ie. he is a bad influence on her, even though he doesn't mean to be). So he's asking if he should break up with her, for her sake, I think.
