How is university different to high school?

I usually waited a few weeks before buying them to see if they were necessary.

How is university different to high school?

I left whenever I felt like - at $1500 a unit, quite frankly I could care less about the lecturers feelings.

How is university different to high school?

To be honest, I found uni to be pretty similar to High School, except obviously uni is harder and has higher content. To be honest, people go on and on about how much harder uni is than HS like it's some kind of surprise. I mean, what do people expect? Uni is tertiary education, it wouldn't...

Does WAM/uni results actually matter in employment?

Speaking from my experience working in HR and as a job seeker, marks count for very little beyond graduate roles and even then, they arent highly valued. With the exception of say Law, IB and MBB, marks are little more than a check box item for graduate recruiters - essentially, your grades...

Transferring to USYD from ACU. Worth? (BCom)

If USyd offers like a major or course component which ACU doesnt, then Id consider it. Otherwise, dont waste those 5 credit points - the prestige wont count for jack.

Career focussed at a young age and relationships

I love Liz Ryan, I pretty much read every article of hers on LinkedIn - even though she has a very distinct style, I didn't realise it was her until the final line. It was a good read, but I dont necessarily disagree with Joel's approach. True, he probably was a big arrogant, but at least he...

To many commerce graduates not many jobs?

Just to clarify, when I refer to firms, Im not really talking about professional services firms (i.e. Deloitte etc), as they are still strong graduate employers.

To many commerce graduates not many jobs?

From what Ive observed working in HR/Recruitment, the supply of graduates isn't an issue in comparison to the nature of the jobs market. For a starters, graduate programs are being progressively scaled back in many industries. The reason being that the ROI just isnt there for many firms...

    Investment Banking

Commerce is an extremely vast field and there is a lot out there which most uni students have probably never heard of let alone considered.

    'small' accounting firm cadetship

This pretty much. Also, keep in mind the workforce is becoming more and more mobile as a whole.

End looms for $150 million Opal card loophole used by Sydney commuters Read more: ht

Re: End looms for $150 million Opal card loophole used by Sydney commuters Read more Absolutely outrageous - the Opal card has been a fantastic development from the State Government but we are already paying enough. The Sydney Trains service is overall quite mediocre - I mean, a little bit of...

Go8 and University Elitism: Does it Matter ?

Old thread but this - it isnt "prestige", but moreso opportunity because UNSW and USyd have far more programs and industry connections on offer than other unis. It's very rare in this day and age for employers to discriminate directly on the basis of universities (it does happen though).

Jobs you can get with commerce degree?

You can do a whole range of things with a Commerce degree, or most other degrees. I think people have a false idea that degree=specific job and that isn't exactly the case. Obviously, if you want to be a lawyer you need a law degree, but for the vast majority of professions you don't need a...

    Investment Banking

This pretty much - IB is glamorous but you have to work for your money. Even in top tier law the culture is very cut-throat, if you arent bringing home the bacon they weed you out, graduate, associate or partner.

Is the work / assessments harder at a top university?

From my experience, in most fields employers give little extra weight to a HD average over a D average, unless your HD average comes with a uni medal or something. Generally speaking, if you have a D average or higher employers will get the impression that you are capable and competent with uni...

Is the work / assessments harder at a top university?

I probably value grades a lot more than most HR people mainly because I do think they offer some insight into an applicant. Ultimately, uni work is similar to real work, in that you have a task, a deadline and expected standards which sometimes aren't always clear. So strong grades to me...

Is the work / assessments harder at a top university?

Yes and no, but hardly absolute. The assessments I got at uni were very similar to my mates who did similar degrees at other unis (including Go8s). The marking standards are similar, but as you pointed out, at a uni with lower cutoffs, the calibre of students is lower and as a result, the bell...

How good is University of Notre Dame?

I went to Notre Dame and overall, I found it to be quite a good university. The teaching quality was high as was the course content - realistically, in this sense Notre Dame is no better or worse than one of the bigger universities. However, Notre Dame isn't for everyone. If you want the...

Construction management/ Construction Project management/ Project management

Construction Management/Construction Project Management are pretty much similar. It's a good profession to break into, however that's mainly because the construction market is booming. Whether it remains this was long term seems unlikely. Project Management is a broader field which covers...
