    Where do you stand?

Re: BOS political compass scatterplot So you don't know what you really want, but some bureaucrat in Canberra does? But every person is an individual. What is good for you may be terrible for someone else. You've nitpicked at my posts, all the while ignoring the main point. Different people...

Is smacking a child ever acceptable?

That's a sign that the child is LEARNING. Violence is an excellent way to make people good and virtuous. Parents should condition their children to violent punishment at a young age. That way they will accept a government that locks people up in violent rape dungeons for committing victimless...

    Where do you stand?

Re: BOS political compass scatterplot Not to mention the government driving up the cost of healthcare by making it free for people to drain healthcare resources for frivolous and un-necessary purposes, and by granting doctors carte blanche to deliberately limit the supply of doctors...

    Where do you stand?

Re: BOS political compass scatterplot Obviously I don't agree with public healthcare at all. However, even if we assume the existence of a public health system, your objection is still easily overcome. If people willfully do certain dangerous things like riding without seat belts or take...

    Where do you stand?

Re: BOS political compass scatterplot Nah bro, I think he was alluding to some bizarre hypothetical involving comparing clones with PHD's to their non PHD counterparts.

    Where do you stand?

Re: BOS political compass scatterplot Mate, I honestly have no idea what you meant by that post and your attempt to clarify it has only confused me further. This bit was even more obscure. It sounds like something Iron would say in one of his more deranged moods.

    Where do you stand?

Re: BOS political compass scatterplot I see. Well we should all take great comfort in knowing that the government is deliberately acting in bad faith.

    is freedom universal or relative?

Just like in the middle ages, people laughed at the idea of democracy. Or in Ancient Rome, people no doubt laughed at those who had the audacity to suggest that society could function without slavery. The fact that the majority of people agree that there is a need for a government which has...

    Where do you stand?

Re: BOS political compass scatterplot Some things are black and white. It's like saying "omg you're such an extremist because you believe that rape is always wrong. You're such a fundamentalist because you refuse to accept that rape can be a great idea when better minds than yours like clever...

    Where do you stand?

Re: BOS political compass scatterplot Yes you would almost certainly be happier if you were healthier, all else being equal. But "all else" is not equal. To get better health you have to sacrifice things like time, money and short term pleasure. How much of these things should you trade off...

    Where do you stand?

Re: BOS political compass scatterplot I am glad you have managed to admit this. The philosophy and "science" of happiness is an interesting topic, no doubt. But when it comes to deciding what we should actually do in the real world, the inescapable conclusion is that forcing people to do...

    Where do you stand?

Re: BOS political compass scatterplot Some of the questions do not ask specifically about what policies you support, they merely try to gauge your feelings about certain issues. This leads to problems. Classic example: "Sex outside marriage is usually immoral." You may well think it is...

The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed

It is legal to carry the semi-auto version of AK-47s an M-16s in many parts of the USA. The general trend is that where people are not allowed to carry guns on the street, crime rates are actually higher. Of course this doesn't prove anything either way, but there is certainly no evidence to...

    Where do you stand?

Re: BOS political compass scatterplot It may be a good thing that you opt for the pie. You may be happier choosing the pleasure of pies over the benefits of long term health. That is a decision for you, and you alone to make. It's a ridiculous assumption that every decision that maximizes...

    Where do you stand?

Re: BOS political compass scatterplot So people can be trusted to do everything for themselves, except when it comes to defense. Then people suddenly become morons who are incapable of acting in their own best interests without a violent monopoly forcing them to.

    Where do you stand?

Re: BOS political compass scatterplot Turns out that socialist policies work quite well when you have a small population and massive reserves of natural resources for state owned companies to sell. If you look at countries like Singapore and Hong Kong that have built themselves up from...

    Where do you stand?

Re: BOS political compass scatterplot it's just like any other service, people demand it, so they pay someone to provide it. Also I'd question whether standing armies, public or private are needed at all if the people are well armed.

    Where do you stand?

Re: BOS political compass scatterplot I like the government to fuck with people and interfere in their lives, BUT ONLY SOMETIMES, like when it is done for THE GREATER GOOD.

The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed

Well at the very least we can say that it provides some sort of deterrent and certainly doesn't make attackers more likely to invade. So it is a benefit of gun freedoms, although the extent of the benefit is debatable.

The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed

History says otherwise. The Vietcong was able to defeat the US army ffs. Ordinary citizens that know the local terrain often have a huge advantage over armies which suffer from all the typical flaws of centralized planning. Of course there are no guarantees. If a superpower is determined to...
