McGee: With that flare, I trust you will own Ext-2. (In a positively encouraging, non-sarcastic sense. Honest.) --- I'll join in the commiseration over out English marks. I'm quite happy with Paper 1 because I got the highest marks in the year for Sections 1 & 2, but then the happiness...

    Projectile Motion Q

Take notice of the information that you are given. Most of the time, they're there for a reason. One of the conditions that you can establish immediately is the fact that the trajectory passes through P(a, b), which means that at some time T after the projection, x = a & y = b will...

Post Your Final 3unit Assesment Marks

Same as you, but since I do Ext-2 it's 93/100. What sort of a rank is that at your school? I'm 2nd/56. 1st place is on 95/100.

LOL. Turns out I was wrong about my marks being "finalised". I got 2 more for Bio. There was a part of one question that the marker had somehow overlooked and so didn't mark. He took the papers back to review and then somehow overlooked that part again. So now I'm 1st in trial with 98/100...

    Trials Results

I'm glad to see that everyone else has done well. Congratulations! I had my results finalised today. I'm not particularly happy with my performance in the trial exams. I was down with the flu for an entire week just before my trials started so I missed out on classes and had to learn some...

Locus - Tangent to 2 circles

Oops my bad again. LOL. I thought the line was 3x + 4y = 10. These silly mistakes are going to cost me a lot in the HSC. Dunno what I'd do without you.

    Locus equation

The "distance" here refers to the perpendicular distance. The variable point P(x, y) is required to be perpendicularly 5 units away from the given line. The parameters do not relate to any specific points on the line such as the intercepts. I'm not sure why you needed to find the points A and B...

    Locus equation

3D co-ordinate geometry is one thing they should be introducing into the new maths syllabus - for MX2 at least. Think how much more fun that will be.

    assesment marks to hsc

Raw assessment marks do not necessarily correlate well to your HSC mark. This can vary depending on the subject, the difficulty of your assessments and the strictness of the marking. Our maths department was keen to reveal of past statistics. Apparently every one who got over 65/100 as their...

Locus - Tangent to 2 circles

I'm not so sure that this is a locus question. As a hint - remember that one way to define a tangent to a circle is that the tangent is a line which has only ONE point of contact with the circle. This will mean that when the equations of the line and the circle are solved simulaneously, there...

    Locus equation

These are great points. I overlooked the fact that another locus also satisfies the parameters. It's a good thing SS pointed out. I'll make all my mistakes now and hope to avoid them in the HSC. :shy:

    Locus equation

Can anyone please give me a rundown of how to do to the following question: "Find the equation in exact form of the locus of a point that moves so that its distance from the line x - 2y - 3 = 0 is always 5 units." The line x - 2y - 3 = 0 being in there has just confused me." Whenever a...

    Preferences?

Re: First Preferences? ^ That and Adv Science is much more research oriented. I haven't looked at how other unis do it but USYD and UNSW would require students to complete some advanced research projects as part of the coursework. USYD also said that there may be opportunities to work together...

    Uni Open Days

Sorry if this has already been brought up. I didn't look at every post. I will be going to the Talented Science Student Program at USYD. It's happening during the open day but apparently it's a full day event so I'm wondering which one I should attend. Does anyone know if it will be much...

Polynomial Questions - Please help :)

You're welcome. I'm glad that this has been helpful for you. Don't hesitate to post a question if you need help. The great thing about this sort of threads is that everyone can learn something from it. It's a learning process for me as well because I get practise at how to structure my responses...

Polynomial Questions - Please help :)

Burwood Girls HS. I'm not sure how you'd go about this with cubic polynomials. Please enlighten us. You can "cheat" around when given that two or more roots are equal by using the rules for roots of multiplicity. (Ext-2 course, although I can't see why).

    Textbook with worked solutions?

They're great if you're struggling with the basic concepts and need something to guide you along, but don't rely on them to get you through exams. Personally, I really don't like those books because they offer no depth of understanding. I think so, but Dymocks would be more expensive. Those...

    yr 12 subject woes

Mm hmm. Mechanic took a while to work my head around when it came to deciding which forces to resolve in which directions, etc., but I'm enjoying the topic. A bit of challenge every now and then is what makes maths fun. *jabs at English* Okay, I hope I did not just make myself sound like a...
