It 's very important for you to consider how hard you have had to work to obtain these past results and whether you have enough reserved efforts to put towards Ext-2 Maths in Yr 12. Although it is an extension course, remember that Ext-2 Maths is in fact a 2-unit subject and many would agree that it is much more demanding than the 2U & Ext-1 courses combined. Keep in mind that every subject will get progressively more demanding through Prelim to HSC, and this means that in Yr 12 you will need to work harder than you do now for all your subjects.
I would recommend that all Ext-1 students in Yr 11 should try Ext-2. Just make sure that you have at least11 units so that if you don't enjoy it or if you find it difficult, you are always in the position to withdrawl.
Yr 11 marks are not indicative of your likely performance in Yr 12. I would put the focus on your conceptual understanding of mathematics. You will do well in Ext-2 Maths if you have an in-depth understanding of everything you have learnt so far and if you have the willingness and curiosity to seek out more.
You wanted to know how I am doing now - I'm 4th in Adv English, 1st in Biology, 1st in Chemistry, 1st in Ext-1 Maths and 2nd in Ext-2 Maths. You'd be surprised if I told you how mediocre my ranks were in Yr 11 - take English for example, I was 64th back then. Although that was mainly because I had missed out on Yr 10 and a term of Yr 11 due to sickness, this is still to show you that you can achieve good results as long as you are determined to work hard.
I do regret not having been able to do Physics (the classes were full when I came back to school in Yr 11) and finish Legal Studies (my school put Ext-2 Maths and LS on the same line in Yr 12 so I was forced make a cut). So if it had been entirely up to me, I'd be doing 14 units for my HSC. Nonetheless I am very happy with my current subjects. It can't get much better than doing 8 units for passion, 2 units to suck up to compulsory BOS requirements and have a some spare time to work and socialise. I'm performing well academically, I work 6 hours a week in a library and I have regular picnics, movies and dinner parties with friends. If you manage your time well, it's really a win-win-win situation.
I'd have to disagree with Tanjin in saying that it is safer for a chronic procrastinatorto to have more than 10 units. How is it possible for anyone to manage the extra units if they already procrastinate when it comes to the minimum 10? In my opinion, the more you tend to procrastinate, the less units you should do. At least then you'd be looking at a much smaller pile of work the night before - or yet worse, the first morning of - a week-long assessment block.
