time dilation and the paradox thingy

The paradox doesn't really exist if you introduce acceleration into it. A better example might be as follows: Imagine two twins, James and Mary, who are in deep space, each in their own space ship. They are both at the sampe point in space and then suddenly, without any noticeable acceleration...

How much does prelim get tested in the HSC?

I slept through year 11 chemistry. Metals and The Chemical Earth rank up there with some of the most painful stuff I've ever had to sit through, Metals especially.

Binding Energy and Strong Nuclear Force

I think the binding energy is energy initially possessed by individual particles which is dissapated when they join together to form an atomic system. As to the force being an inherent propery of particles I'd say that's probably the way it is. I'm not sure whether theories like QED and QCD...

    balmer series question

    letting y = lambda = wavelength v = c/y = - (m/4.pi.h)(e2/4.pi.E.h)2[(4 - n2)/4n2) c = y . (m/4.pi.h3)(e2/4.pi.E)2[(n2 - 4)/4n2) y = [16.pi.h3n2c]/[m.{e2/4.pi.E}2(n2 - 4)] = A

    balmer series question

Hmm, I'm pretty sure it's A not C but then again my basic algebra/arithmetic ain't that hot.

    balmer series question

Do you know which one is the correct answer?

    balmer series question

Strange, because I can't see how the others would be correct.

    balmer series question

That's a pretty stupid question 'cause it's just testing algebra. With a bit of manipulation I suspect that the answer is A. EDIT: A way you could reason it is that both C and D have the (n2 - 4) or (4 - n2) bit on top, which they shouldn't, making them incorrect. B only has h2 whereas it...

Binding Energy and Strong Nuclear Force

The two things are related but I don't think that the binding energy actually provides the energy for the strong nuclear force. For the most part I think binding energy is probably lost as radiation to the environment. Check out this diagram...

time dilation and the paradox thingy

yes and yes :p. It's quite possible that the latter would also contribute to the former.

time dilation and the paradox thingy

But it's a real physical thing in that once the twins meet the space twin will in fact be physically younger. Taking the example of muons travelling from the upper atmosphere at relativistic speeds, I think time dilation does lead to real physical effects - i.e. the oscillations of particles...

time dilation and the paradox thingy

It's because of the nature of time. When they return to earth the space twin's clock starts to run at the same speed again but upon comparison they would discover that the earth clock has measured a greater length of time than the space clock. Time dilation itself doesn't linger but its effects...

time dilation and the paradox thingy

If you want to get a better understanding and to look at the paradox in more depth then search google for the "twin paradox". Here's something to start with: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twin_paradox

Totally disgusted by the American arrogance and comments on Australian med schools!

Likewise, read my post before you accuse me of accusations :P. I never quoted anyone directly, i'm commenting on the undertones. I would, however, say that "I hate american tourists" is on par with "I hate americans" (not equivalent, but just as bad).

Totally disgusted by the American arrogance and comments on Australian med schools!

You're being very one sided. If you're going to attack 'American arrogance' you have to be willing to look at how bad Australians can be at the same time. A lot of Americans actually decide not to come here (or to leave) due to the amount of racism agaisnt Americans and anti-American sentiment...

    How was the exam?

I found that exam to be longer than most ones I've done before. I didn't have much time at the end at all for checking and I missed a silly mistake (which I spotted while putting numbers at the top of pages afterwards) which should hopefully only set me back 1 or 2 marks. I also BS'ed 7b)iv)...

    permutations???

Think of a simple scenario of 3 people. When standing in a line the following arrangements are different: {1, 2, 3} , {2, 3, 1} and {3, 2, 1} however, if you put these arrangements in a circle they are identical (due to rotational symmetry) which is why you have to start of by 'putting one...
