The 2004 HSC - Mathematics Extension 1 Paper

You're lucky! That means better scaling for 4U. The scaling parameters for Extension 2 are determined by the performance of the Extension 2 students on the Extension 1 paper. (And the scaling for Extension 1 is determined by the performance of the Extension 1 students on the Mathematics paper...

    prologged

Prolog is such a fun language! The 'nl' terminal just prints a newline character. The '!' operator cuts the algorithm so that it can't recursively backtrack past the point where the operator was used. By default, Prolog will attempt to find all the possible solutions for a specified...

    UAI and Percentile

This process is explained in the UAI Technical Report (different to the scaling reports). It is not an estimate, and does not involve making assumptions. You can use the SC examinations to rank all students in the state comprising a particular age cohort - the HSC cohort for a particular year...

    How is UAI Calculated?

We're hoping to have an online FAQ completed by the time results are released... But that in itself takes a fair bit of effort.

    How is UAI Calculated?

This is a very broad question. Perhaps unsurprisingly, UAC have a simple explanation on their website: http://www.uac.edu.au/pubs/pdf/uaibook_2003_web.pdf Whilst the book is for 2003 HSC students, the process is exactly the same for 2004. After reading that, see <a...

    Loner advantage

Cactus is right. Your moderated assessment mark will be your exam mark, irrespective of whatever your raw internal assessment mark was. (That mark would be referred to in the case of illness/misadventure.)

It was submitted to us as well - obviously we ignored it.

This Years Vs. Last Years Paper.. And Alignment

There was an article in today's SMH that said the general perception of teachers was that the paper was fairer than last year's.

    Scale up or down??

That's not always true. As a general guide to whether raw marks have been scaled up or down in the past, see: http://www.boredofstudies.org/scaledmeans.php The raw marks for courses with positive loadings were, on average, scaled up. It's difficult to quantify exactly how much a...

    Loner advantage

The advantage is that your moderated assessment mark will be set equal to your exam mark. Essentially, the exam means everything for you. :)

    Misadventure/Appeal due to poor teaching?

It's a little late now, jezzabelle86... you really should have said something when it was occurring. Phone the Board and ask for advice (anonymously).

    Raw band cut-offs. (Updated: 15/09/04)

Technically, you're not 'suing' the Board - they haven't done anything wrong. The FOI Act just gives you the right to apply for information that is held about you. :) It's really quite easy. The Board has provided a form that can simply be filled out and sent in...

Why give a hard exam and then have marks aligned?

It would vary - this wouldn't be true for all papers. On the general premise that the questions usually increase in difficulty, I suppose you could use that as a guide though (but a guide for what, I'm not entirely sure).

    getting a certain band

But you should keep in mind that there often isn't any real distinction between the bands. e.g. A student who scores 90 is really only slightly better than one who scores 89, even though the former was in band 6 and the latter was in band 5. They're better thought of as HSC mark ranges. :)

how does our hsc assessment mark get determined?

There's a big thread at the top of this forum entitled: "Explanation of HSC Marks (Moderating)". You should read that. :)

    Internal Assessment Marks

The HSC exam is used as a statewide 'benchmark' to moderate assessment marks from different schools so that they're all on the same scale. See this thread.
