It's not really a matter of what your teacher thinks. Your teacher isn't doing the HSC. The question is, are you willing to put in effort in this subject to improve on your portfolio work? Just because your teacher says he thinks you will loose marks doesn't mean you will. It's all on you...

Yes you need to have done at least 2 Units of History in the Preliminary Course. The HSC booklet my school gave out last year told me so. :)

If you don't feel confident in your writing skills, then I recommend dropping Ancient History. You are right in saying A.H. involves alot of essays and alot of your marks will depend on your proficiency at explaining the content of the syllabus. For geography, you only go on a few field trips...
