It's just shitty because there's the potential for a few towns, all around Australia, to be built up into larger cities but state governments are so city-centric that they just keep fucking it up.
I agree with this. I mean, in NSW at least, if you don't live in the Sydney area you're more or less screwed. It would be good to see some of the regional centres built up enough so that people aren't forced to move for basic reasons like getting a job. Not to mention that outside of Sydney it seems that unless you're heavily into sheep and suchlike that you'd be bored out of your fucking mind. It wouldn't hurt to give the people out there something to do.

haha your sig is fantastic Musk

These constant polls are getting annoying. It's very difficult to get an idea of what is actually happening, which movements are significant, which movements are statistical errors.

*Makes vow to avoid polls for the rest of the election*

Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer has launched an attack on the Labor Leader's ability to speak Chinese, calling him a show-off.

Kevin Rudd this morning gave an interview in Mandarin to a Chinese television station.

But Mr Downer is far from impressed.

"Well, I think he should focus on speaking to the Australian people not trying to show off that he can speak a foreign language," he said.

"Thousands upon thousands of Australians can speak Chinese and Japanese and French and German. The question is whether they're fit to be the Prime Minister of Australia."
What on earth is the stupid man's problem?

i believe rudd is more attractive to the younger generation. they will probably be more inclined to vote labor, or one of the minor parties such as the greens. i wish i could vote!

Jeesh come on, its not that bad out of Sydney. Have you ever lived outside of Sydney? I live in Newcastle currently and have lived in rural places before that. Jobs are plentiful enough and there's not a sheep in site.

Re: 2007 Federal Election - Coalition or Labor/Howard or Beazley?

This is the really basic concept of labor!

They wish to make everyone equal, neither extreme will exist (rich or poor) but the are blinded by the fact that everything will fall terribly apart if this happens. Lets say a company has a senior manager earning $80,000 and someone at the age of 20 joins the company he should also be earning $80,000 according to labor. In the bitter end the company will be paying more money and profits etc.. will decrease meaning 40 or so people are out of jobs.

Without both extremes this world will go down the drain!

okay point taken, sorry if I was generalising. I have lived outside of Sydney before, although that was quite a while back, and I currently live in a rural area right on the city fringe. I was talking more about places like, say, Broken Hill, Cowra, Lightning Ridge, etc. Perhaps I should have been more explicit. Newcastle, at least as far as I remember it, is fine. I just think that there are some places in this state that would be a whole lot better for the introduction of some decent public transport and other such services.

Do you have the faintest clue what Labor stands for? Rhetorical question, of course, you clearly don't. Labor believes in equality of opportunity (as do the Liberals and all other parties, at least in theory), not equality of outcome.

It seems weird that there's so little TV election advertising at the moment. I watched four hours of commercial TV last night - National Bingo Night (weirdest show ever) and About A Boy - and I only saw four ads, only one of which was from a party. (There was the Liberal party's not-at-all-a-scare-campaign "70% union officials, YOU WILL PAY FOR IT" one, one of the farmers federation ones, and two of the ACTU Real People Real Stories ones.) I mean, at this point last campaign you could barely move without being told about interest rates and Mark Latham and The Howard Government Plan. It's strange.

Well yeah, it was at this point last election that the Coalition's devastating interest rates adds were rolled out, followed by the L-plate stuff which finished Iron Mark off.

/fails in effort to add these

You're confusing the Australian labor party with socialism.

You don't really understand socialism either though.

Primaries 47-42, which is no movement for the Coalition and a one-point (so statistically insignificant) drop for the ALP.

Rudd's freely admitted that he's a socialist.

Well, socialism is an extremely broad concept. Both of our major parties more or less adhere to social democratic concepts, which is a form of socialism, and the ALP is a member of Socialist International. But I don't think anyone could argue that Rudd supports paying senior managers in a company the same as the guy sweeping the floor, which is what our friend PaulM suggests.

Im pretty sure he was describing himself as a 'Christian' socialist, and it was in the context of a religious discussion.

Interest rates up. 6.75% now, 1.5% above those record lows that John informed us of at the 2004 election. Here's an interesting comparison of the ALP vote and interest rates since the last election.

As expected, Labor has very quickly released a recut version of its 'Who do you trust?' interest rates ad.

Re: 2007 Federal Election - Coalition or Labor/Howard or Beazley?

I'd be very surprised if this ends up helping the Coalition.
I think the same thing happened around a similar time during the '96 election, when the Reserve Bank's independence was relatively new. It didnt help Keating.
Actually, this election is increasingly looking like the 96 landslide - but to plagarise the 7.30 report, 'the voters arent waiting for John Howard with baseball bats, just a pair of slippers and warm cup'o'tea'

true, but also, (correct me if im wrong), if howard somehow loses his seat, as leader of the liberals can't he force out (by any means) a deputy bencher in a safe liberal seat and call a by election?
