Whatever floats you boat c: My little ragefest was more in context due to another thread at which things escalated to the point of being ridiculous.

Ok then, going by your definition of derogatory then, if I were to say, be offended if you use words like postman or mailman or mankind or 'dude' or 'guys' when addressing females, because I believe it's patriarchal, are you going to stop using those words? How about if I find the word "attitude" annoying and offensive? Would you stop using that word? Although these examples seem somewhat more extreme than what has occurred, I believe the same message is present - that is, someone or some group wants to push their values and expectations on an unrelated individual.

It's also somewhat hypocritical that you believe everyone's interpretation of derogatory varies and yet you expect turntaker's idea of derogatory words to be the same as yours - otherwise you wouldn't be pushing your opinion on him.

That being said, doing the above mentioned in itself I don't believe is necessarily wrong, how you go about doing so is a different matter.


Still don't get why people were raging over turntaker's post and no the other hundred posts containing similar language.

Lastly, just would like to point out that by referencing turntaker's IRL jokes, you're implying somehow that terms like 'gay' are funny IRL but not on the net? Seems a bit contradictory since otherwise turntaker's "jokes" have no relevance to this argument ...?

Either way, as long as Turntaker isn't feeling uncomfortable I don't mind~

The thing is... it all comes down to a person's socio-economic background, what values have they been brought up with, and what external forces have influenced them to espouse what they believe in. And maybe from there, they could get all patriarchal on females, but again, as I state before, it's all relative to the individual's upbringings. If someone suddenly has this revelation of "holy shit, my worldviews have forever been shifted because of some radical events", then great. At the same time, it's not necessary to go all anal with your beliefs on your friends - ultimately it's for them to make an informed understanding of whether X word is considered derogatory and Y word isn't.

To be honest, I think you misunderstood what I was saying; I was never, ever trying to be a dick and blurt out stuff like "well, your use of language is utter bullshit in this context, hence you are wrong in every single way" - if I was, the situation could've gotten more awkward (but this is the internet lol, peeps can do whatever the hell they want). I even PM'ed him to acknowledge what I posted and turntaker said it was alright, since he was just mucking around. So I will admit I did go overboard, but I was I ever trying to act all superior on turntaker? Absolutely not.

Maybe that's because there hasn't been a recent occurrence like turntaker's? Lots of people I know on this forum definitely do not display similar sort of language - sure there's a few that act as keyboard warriors and intimate others, but as I knew them outside of BoS, they're much nicer. Which leads to what you said about me contradicting myself; just to clarify, I'm implying that turntaker's jokes IRL - not using terms like 'gay' or 'retards' on the - is completely different to the net, because you have to remember, online persona's don't necessarily reflect who they really are in the real world. So I'll let turntaker be with how he expresses his humour. Because at the end of the day, this is an online forum, so there's so much you can say without getting bagged out. (a.k.a if you shitpost, you will get shitposted by others )

Disagreed. I might be a bit biased since turntaker's was in one of my failed study groups and thus I'm = more sympathetic towards him than some random person I don't ~know~ on the net, but the people who you've labeled as ones who've continued using derogatory words incessantly, include those who haven't yet realised about the implications behind such language. Like what I've mentioned in my previous post (which you agreed with), such vocab has become the norm.

In turntaker's case I think he didn't realise the extent of how offensive some of his language were (no offense tho, it escalated pretty quickly :/) however, I legit don't know anyone who's willing to conform to another person's expectation if they're almost forced or pressured into it. It's the standard scenario of 'I told you so' that everyone wants to avoid.

Besides what exactly is your definition of derogatory? Is it politically uncorrect language? I've seen other people use gay or retard, policeman, postman etc on this forum and no one's blown up at them to this extent. What's so special about turntaker if I may ask?

BTW, no idea why everybody is so duh against essays. I personally found it quite enjoyable lewl (albeit slightly intrusive as I'm sure you two were carrying out ~friendly~ fire in a semi-private way.) I mean, with internet comes disagreements. And if they're not friendly (or even if they were) too many people rush into claiming it drama before they read it properly. If anything, these 'essays' hadn't regressed into insults yet, and in comparison to most internet arguments, I'd say it's pretty polite haha.
