I'm not personally, but I know many people who have done 4-unit maths and done really well in it too. You need to be extremely dedicated and willing to work your butt off for a whole year, so yeah, be prepared to allocate quite a bit of time and effort too. On the other hand, doing 4 unit makes 2 and 3 unit much easier apparently by comparison. Actually enjoying maths helps too lol

After doing 4 unit conics, parametrics in 3u is like conics for dummies.

3unit motion is 4u motion for dummies

3unit polys is 4u polys for dummies

so on so forth

My teacher said that I *could* technically do 4 unit maths, but said that it involved a lot of work and so he didn't really recommend it for me - because he didn't want me to overload myself. (He says I already work so hard - lol ^_^)

I know people who have started tutoring for 4 unit mathematics already. I've taken a look at Complex Numbers, and found it rather interesting and a completely random (but nonetheless logical) concept, and now I'm quite adamant about getting the probation (or even better, invitation) marks for it.

Happens a lot for me. The people in my class are very different, and I'm easily impressed when someone else is able to solve a question that I couldn't, and then I wonder, 'Why didn't I think of that?' lolololol.

I really like seeing other's people's ways of approaching a question.

While I go brute force on the question, i.e. writing down everything I know & trying to put something together, I really like seeing the little subtle tricks people do to make a question alot easier.

e.g. I was amazed when separating a fraction in a maths question made it a trillion times easier.

Also note, 4unit - you need a VERY solid foundation of algebra and algebraic manipulation ESPECIALLY with trig.

Also, learn to draw graphs neatly, not only is there a topic on graphs, but conics and complex and a few other topics require a diagram to aid in your working.

I'm considering doing 4U, but I'm weighing the advantages of doing 4U and keeping my 2U HSC mark from this year (I'm accelerated).

Oh yes, and the common question...'how hard do you have to work'.... you have to work uber uber uber uber hard.

Are SBHS people allowed to drop to Advanced if they want to? Or does the school tell everybody to do Extension?

Well when doing the 'Extension 2' course, it counts as 2units towards your HSC, and 'Extension 1' counts as 2units (making up 4).

But in reality, the workload (relative to time per unit) for Extension 2 is actually more like 3units, so take that into considering when deciding whether to do Extension 2 or not. (ie. you should think of your total maths at 5units of study even though its 4)

and as for the "mechanics" topic for Extension 2, i can tell you now you don't need to study that in depth (or at all) to get relatively high marks assuming you have a sound knowledge on the other topics
