since I'm 50/50 on this pen preference (I use both), here's a little experiment:
guess what these colours are
(grayscaled and see which one is better seen)

will show the answers later

black or blue (generally former) in exams for year 11 and year 12
except I tended to underline things in purple/pink

in other years, I wrote with whatever pen worked best.
once I wrote in blue and black in the same exam, switching every time my hand was sore or lost train of thought.

I always use black no matter what. Unless it's something where I need to highlight or underline or I've added a new paragraph last minute then I'll use blue

I used to use black mostly throughout my junior years but I changed to blue because all of my friends used blue pens lol

Black fine liner pens are amazing for good handwriting. I bought like 10 packs when I was overseas because it was so cheap there.

May I add the views of an HSC marker - please use black in exams that are going to be scanned as blue often isn't picked up all that clearly and hence the scripts become difficult, if not impossible, to read. As markers are being paid 'by the script' when marking 'online' and not by the number of hours they worked they also won't all necessarily take the time and effort to mark your work - time costs money.
