the smoking rumours weren't rumours - why would singers risk their lung capacity and smoke? it's strange that what you see on tv is only what they show you

Casey's idol dream reality dawns
By Damien Murphy

No sleep and more than a couple of packets of cigarettes later, the Australian Idol winner Casey Donovan did not seem to know what hit her and wanted to be bone idle more than anything yesterday.

So too did her runner-up mate, Anthony Callea, who was also full of exhaustion and nicotine as the pair yawned their way through a round of media interviews on the rooftop of the Ten Network's headquarters in Pyrmont. "I just feel like a big blob of crap," Donovan said. "All I want to do is crash, but there's all these interviews."

The victor and the vanquished had stayed up all night after attending the network's Sydney Opera House party, Donovan with a school friend and a couple of mates from Bass Hill, and Callea drinking champagne with his parents.

"I got my dream," Donovan said. "But nearly everyone wants to be famous and live out their dreams and do the thing they want to be. So they've been watching me for weeks, falling over and stuffing up, growing in front of them. I'm sort of them, if you know what I mean."

Amid the cigarettes and then interviews, Donovan thought it was a good idea to follow her predecessor Guy Sebastian's advice and dose herself with Berocca to protect her big, untutored voice. "And maybe I'll get a vocal coach too,"she said.

Her personal life has already become public property. At her first press conference on Sunday night her aunt, Agnes Donovan, raised the jarring issue of her relationship with her estranged father, musician Merv Donovan.

"Don't want to go there if you don't mind," she said.

Donovan and Callea belonged to the television network yesterday. Now Donovan at least becomes the property of the record company Sony BMG.

This morning she starts work on her debut album to be ready for the Christmas trade. Her single from the talent quest, Listen With Your Heart, will be available in stores on Monday.

Donovan and Callea are also to start rehearsals with other Australian Idol contestants for a roadshow across the country.

Donovan's first day in the sun was clouded by advertisement in Sydney and Melbourne newspapers directing her fans to a gay porn site featuring a large American chap also going by the name Casey Donovan. "I read something ... don't really know anything about it. Whose he?" she yawned.

A NATION IN TUNE

· The final of the talent quest's second season was the most watched program of the year, with a national audience peaking at 3.47 million as the announcement of the winner loomed after 10pm on Sunday.

· The peak was down on the 3.65 million who tuned in for the first Australian Idol final verdict last year.

· Sunday night's show swept every demographic, achieving a 74.1 per cent share of the 16-39 audience and 66.7 per cent of the 25-54s.

i snuck past security straight into the opera house, and gave the dressing rooms of andrew, james, anthony, casey, judges rooms a visit....Next to casey's sony ericson fone was an open packet of winnie blues of which i stole a couple of cigarettes......Mark Holden had a bunch of kit kats in his room, which i also took, and i managed to borrow andrew and james' lollies and bottle of water.......then i went down to watch the whole thing live and for free, without once being asked to leave......oh and managed to hug lizzie and skye off neighbours......have a 5minute chat with shannon noll(top bloke), and get to talk to fryzie and trevor.....ohh and TOULA from fat pizza

how i did it??....well myself and about 6 mates originally went to try scope the teenie boppers that we anticipated would be there, then after having no luck, i bumped into these too younger girls who had vip necklaces on....talked to them for a bit, and they decided to show me around the place....lol...they took me everywhere.......btw...marcia hines has the best dressing room......veryy posh....heaps of lights, mirrors, make-up shit....and at the end of the night as she was leaving....people asked her to pose for some foto's, and one bloke went to put her arm around her...i was shocked to hear her say "get your hands off me" in an angry tone and push him away.....infront of everyone.....also met joel turner, he beat boxed for us....and took foto's...top bloke....

I agree. I said it before and I'll say it again, Angie and Ricki Lee are two of the VERY best in the comp. Compared to them, Casey, Amali, Emelia, Marty etc. are all dull.
I also disagree with the final two. I find all this "Australia's youngest Idol" etc. etc. stuff annoying.

Yeah I dont get why its only the top 10 that tour - how rorted do Angie and Dan feel?

I think Anthony had the best 'package', he had the best voice in the comp. However I think Casey won on sentimental value, since people watched her grow etc. and got bored of Anthony

i totally agree

his personality was not boring

edited: i think ricki would have had to pull out like cosima because her voice was really starting to strain when she left the comp, it was pretty much better on the final though

Australian Idol runner-up Anthony Callea has signed a recording contract with Sony BMG.

The pint-sized popstar was pipped at the post by 16-year-old Sydney schoolgirl Casey Donovan in Sunday night's Idol final.

But the 21-year-old from Melbourne will release a debut single next month, followed by his debut album, after securing the contract.

"When I was told the news earlier [yesterday] I was absolutely speechless," Callea said.

"This is an absolute dream come true and I can't wait to get into the studio and start recording."

He thanked the company and "all my fans for their loyal support".

His first single as a solo artist will be a version of The Prayer, the song which became his trademark during the reality talent quest.

It will hit the airwaves on December 6 and retail stores on December 19.

Sony BMG Australia chief executive Denis Handlin said he looked forward to working with Callea.

"His impressive performances on Australian Idol and the fervour with which the Australian public have responded to him demonstrate that this talented young man has an incredible future," Mr Handlin said.

"Anthony has an assurance surrounding his performances that is rare in someone so young and a clear vision for his musical future."
