Federal Parliament returns from its winter break on Tuesday!

A new Senate.

The government still hasn't made good on their commitment to reform QT. (House clean-up gathers dust)

She proposed this while in Opposition, now in government I doubt they'll (and herself) go ahead with that. But I do support our tax being used for Gillard to get a new hair cut. ;)

I am underwhelmed by every Australian politician on the scene right now.
Nelson on Lateline right now. So frigid and rehersed. I object to this stiffness and insincerity

Morris Iemma on the brink of political oblivion

STATE MPs Nathan Rees and Carmel Tebbutt will lead Labor to the 2011 election after Premier Morris Iemma mapped out his exit strategy from politics yesterday.

Senior Labor figures are predicting Mr Iemma could be gone from state politics within 12 months. [...]

As the Government descended into political paralysis, government sources revealed that a deal had been struck to allow Mr Rees to succeed Mr Iemma as a non-factional premier, rivalling the rise of former premier Neville Wran in 1976.

It would allow Ms Tebbutt to remain as deputy and appease the dominant right-wing faction, which would never have agreed to the Left controlling the two top positions.

"It would be fair to say Nathan and Carmel have been in close discussions in the past 48 hours," a senior Labor Party source said. "And Carmel will support Nathan for the leadership."

Mr Iemma was also expected to quit as Premier before the 2011 election, although sources claimed it could be hastened if the Government suffered a massive swing against it in the Ryde by-election, created by the resignation of Deputy Premier John Watkins.

"It is looking more like 2009 than 2011," said a senior minister last night.

"But a huge loss in Ryde could make his (Mr Iemma's) position untenable and force him to leave sooner."
The 10.1% margin in Ryde will evaporate instantly. The question is how big the new Liberal margin will be. (Battle for Ryde puts fear into Labor)

Re: Australian Politics Chatter Thread

It's 50-50 with poll putting Alan Carpenter on the edge

Marginal seat polling (from Newspoll and Westpoll) is looking very good for the Liberals. The ALP primary vote has collapsed from the last poll (down 7%). Carpenter's dissaproval is up 8%. The 2PP figure of 50/50 is very genrous for labor from a 35% primary.

It's difficult to call this one. Conflicting signals suggest it could go either way. However i will take a punt and go with a narrow Liberal win, with the Nationals holding the balance of power. (Nats are not in coalition with Libs in WA) If Labor win, it'll be because of the 'one vote one value' changes which stripped country areas of quite a few seats.

Lyne and Mayo by-elections are also today.

I'll say:

Mayo: Lib retain.
Lyne: Oakeshott gain from Nationals. (Probally won't even go to preferences)
