I also read home detention is alot cheaper - not more expensive - maybe we need some economies of scale - but im sure it wouldnt take very much to make it a cheaper option.

The technology, duty of care to ensure safety, supervision and the like would cost more to run.
<<SORRY IT DOUBLE POSTED... DUNNO WHY...>>
interesting thing i read in a magazine i was reading when i was waiting in a lawyers office this morning - avge cost of keeping ur average inmate in jail per year, that is not maximum security extreme violent type people, is $60K a year

the average cost of periodic detention is roughly $5-10K a year, depending on the crime etc

average cost of home detention is $40k a year...so its way less than jail... supervision is almost entirely electronic so you don't need to pay a person to sit n watch em or anything like it used to be...all from a control room type thing... they said the cost of the technology isn't as high as many think but cant remember what they said the end cost of it all was

didnt say where the source was...but since it was a legal practioners' magazine type thing im guessing its australia or nsw wide and its from a reputable source

they reckon the rate of recievidism (not sure if i spelt it right) is less for home detention too so its way more cost effective...

althouhg i guess depends on the categories of offences that qualify for each..but given the rate of re-offence etc seems home detention and periodic detention are more cost effective

there;s a lot of really interesting articles on this on links accessible via the NSW Law society site:)

seee im not an expert on home detention but it would make sense to me that - if we used home detention alot, obviously the costs per prisoner would go down substantiallly.

As we specialise and through masss usage, i would imagine the cost could go down heaps.

Thats what we should be doing - u have absolutely petty pettty pettty harmlesss criminals being locked up for total minor crimes.

Its expensive and its totally unjust.

The punishment should fit the crime - if you make a couple of thousand $ from a non voilent crime - u should not be sent to jail for a year and be bashed or raped.

petty crims should be in home detention away from more serious criminals that they can learn things from, and in a safe environment where they can rehabilitate themselves - maybe by doing correspondence courses etc.

Of course pycho murderers should be in jail and gang rapists etc.

But drug dealers, theifs, fraudsters - most of them shouldnt be put in jail and home detention could be a reasonable alternative.

I think it is totally horrible what happened to that poor old lady and I think that guy is a total coward but as some1 who has had their bag snatched I would say that it is easier to just hate people of that entire race or whatever. I mean I could say I hate all Aboriginal people but it's not going to get me anywhere. I had one bad experience with an Aboriginal person but I'm not going to be so presumptuous to say that all Aboriginals are like that.

The truth is that people who are white, black etc etc all commit crimes and I don't think that we should let them create a back steretype for those who are doing the right thing.

true there too right... unfortunately this boy was my 2nd cousin and is now locked up for 10 years. I am from Lakemba and I have lived there all my life (and I will admit it IS a whole). But i just wanted to say that what Sweets has quoted is too right if you hate one you shall not hate all...

nothing more but arab/islamic scum.

good for nothing but trouble, they should all be sent home. stupid fucking cowards.

the world would be such a better place if these types didnt exist.
the report said "middle eastern" NOT "Muslim" so get ur facts right before commenting....just because a person is middle eastern doesn't automaticaLLY make them muslim.
there are huge numbers of middle eastern ppl that are christian at the same time!!!

i agree that makes me so mad... the vast majority of the time the people of "middle eastern appearance" who are commiting these crimes are of muslim faith...

now im half lebanese, and dont look it at all, however, when christians such as myself - and my friends who i suppose look more ethnic and are classed and generalised in this way, it really irritates me.

reading the opening post on this thread made my skin crawl at the immediacy (is that a word?) in which you judge.

ur wrong .....don't relate a person's faith to what they are doing....if the person was muslim, it doesn't mean that his religion tells him to steal......it means the person is a hopeless loser ...... religion plays no role in what some ppl do....and as a consequence it gives muslims a bad name.

the vast majority? it may only seem so because the vast majority of middle easterners are muslim, it doesnt have to be the case.

it irritates you that your friends are generalised? me too! only, you would probably hold up a cross from under your shirt and prolly shout "it wasnt me!"

even though i havent been abused/name called by anyone (save an old lady, trying to preach to me christianity lol! if i wasnt in a hurry, i would have probably made her muddled up about christianity), i always expect it to happen, and have kinda made a mental plan of how i would react, and it would be peaceful for anyone who wants to put words in my mouth.
