I'm sure his reasoning was not to encourage or be associated with binge drinking or whatever, but it's just the way he said it that seemed awkward- "I won't advertise anything immoral, like alcohol". ?

yeah, but i think the article writers may have worded it a bit differently, to make it seem like it was because of religious beliefs thus stressing them as they feel they have to for whatever reason
