Does anyone have any good tips on how to come first in a subject other than studying hard (if there is any other way lol)?

I try and study hard, but then I think of all the people doing the same subject and then I lose all hope in coming even close to 20th in the whole year. I keep thinking why try when there are smarter people doing the same subject .. and failing my maths half-yearlies topped that off. :(

So, any tips? :)

They wanted first more than you did. They worked harder, smarter and more consistently.

Especially for maths, you can't cram. It's a skill mastered by practice.

Foresight - know when the assessments are coming, and plan accordingly.

since you have tried studying hard and it did not pay off, there is only one possible way left

right before an exam, escort all the people who are ahead of you in ranks to a huge tree, then bind them all to that tree using a rope.

finish the exam and then unbind them.
and wallah, you are first again.

if you need help binding them to the tree
call me on 03 021 TIE ME.

Good luck to you sir. :jedi:

No point in trying to aim for first when you aren't doing so well. What you should do, is aim to progressively move upwards, not just jump from nowhere to 1st.

For e.g

In physics, I was ranked 30ish out of 60 last term. I made the decision at beginning of HSC to have a goal for each term.

I set it out like so,

At end of first term, I want to be in the top half of the year, i.e top 30.
End of 2nd term I want to be in the top 15
By end of 3rd term, I want to be in the top 10 (by this point, you should already be happy)
If you are persistent bout that 1st, then 4th term is where you take it. Trials are usually worth the most towards ur HSC, and it comes at a time when you want to move up in ranks...HOW HANDY!!

now...all you have to do is ensure you study well.

It worked for me. In fact, It's worked so well, I was only planning to be top 20 this term, but at the moment I am ranked 2nd. You just have to set up these goals, and work REALLY REALLY REALLY hard to achieve them. I mean, it's hard for the first few weeks, because you're making a change to your study pattern. For me, I began studying everyday for physics, and by the end of the first 2 weeks, I was beginning to lose motivation. Then I took the weekend off and thought about my decision. I decided to push through, and have come through with no problems since.

So the moral of the story is:

STAY MOTIVATED

CONSISTENCY IS THE KEY

SABOTAGE ALL ENEMY <--nah joking lol....but really, you need to study quite hard. Say 30 minutes EACH SUBJECT a day (that is, NOT YOU HOMEWORK AND ASSIGNMENTS, BUT PURE REVISION, PRACTICE PAPERS etc...) and that will be enough to get you a 99+ UAI for the HSC. It sound simple....but 99% of people cannot carry it out. Prove me wrong.

here's what you do, you study heaps, learn all your stuff but the key is read ahead atleast one lesson. now that you have your knowledge, start small answer all questions in class and gain the rep as 'the kid who you go to for help' once you achieve this rep continue it for exam time, then you need to psych your competition out, start with the easy ones then make your way up to the place getters once you've mastered your technique. techniques depend on the person your targeting, be it answer their questions wrong, respond with an 'i dont know', ask heaps of questions while waitin to go in to the room then ask other people the same questions saying ... said this but i thought it was this and confuse them, train yourself to fall into a made panic, study frantically, act like it doesnt care cause its only...

the list is endless

well i'm first in advanced english, legal studies and physics (equal first). I guess what you can do is put in more effort on those take home assessments if you aren't already pulling full marks on them.
As for exams, revising consistently definitely helps :) and not cramming for any exam.

Think about it which would be more effective.. 4 hours in a day the night before the exam OR 1 hour every week for 4 weeks before the exam.

It is all to do with your degree of perfection you get to when you study. Being able to study well is also a skill that can be developed. Try to establish a good study habit and not to leave things until the last minute (by last minute, I mean last few days). This means you just need to keep up with all the work at school so that you do not have to learn some new concepts a few days before big exams.

So... by panicking people,
It will somehow, not waste your own study time, but will make others loose even more marks compared to your lost marks (which you could of gained by studying during that time)?

Anyways if they were smart, they wouldn't get confused since they would know their thing. So you would only be fooling the 'dumber' ones, who you should be ahead of anyways...

Think about it this way. Instead of seeing the HSC as a huge deal of hard work, draw a line...8 cm's or so...Now the HSC is one year, out of your maybe 80's of life? That's 1mm on that 8cm line. So if you can endure that 1mm, it will make the rest of the line so much easier to live through. =]

How do you all know your ranks already?

We don't get them until we get our half yearly reports.
