Do our related texts have to directly connect to our speecific text we study in class? Like can i choose the 2 poems (class text) which I intend to write my essay on (for HSC essay question) and link them to related texts?

For example I picked the poem, "Feliks Skrynecki" by Peter Skrynecki and want to link that to Bend it like Beckham; so i can talk about how both are loosing their connection to their parents homeland and are assimilating into their new society.

Good? Bad?

Thanks in advance :)

They do have to connect, but this can either be through comparison or contrast.

The exam question will ask you to answer the question in relation to your given text, and one or two others of your own choosing (related texts). Therefore you must discuss them both in the same essay.
