As a sidenote, looking at the Parliamentary sitting calendar makes you realise how little work many MPs actually do, considering that when they're not sitting, backbenchers are just on fact-finding trips for reports that no-one reads.
And writing scandalous tell-all diaries which everyone reads :)

My vote: I wanted some fireworks so I split it, Mr Watson for President and the crazy leftie types for SRC members. Naturally, I did not vote Aardvark for Honi - my natural mistrust of proper nouns begining with two vowels (just like Mr Iemma) prevents me from so doing.

Good luck for the folks who did stand for election. Hugs from Manly to you :)

It's okay for the Liberals, because at least you have that to be thankful for. But I'm still the most hated person at the University of Sydney because, as many students have told me, apparently I support VSU, hate women, beat up gay people and am a member of the Liberal Party. For the Liberals, there is no loss of credibility, and no personal damage since nobody hates the individual candidates - just the party. But I AM the campaign. I AM the policies. And it's not RESOLVE they hate - but ME.

i've never heard of u, so don't talk yourself up too much.

You mean, its clear that the student population doesn't want VSU, and doesn't support you and your fascist nazi mates.
How many of those people who don't want VSU have actually sat down and had a constructive debate with someone who is pro-VSU? The fact is that if you're only exposed to an argument for one side you're obviously going to be strongly predisposed towards that argument.

I can assure you that over 90% of those students that didn't vote support VSU. They sure don't care enough about the SRC to VOTE, so why would they care enough to PAY?

Students don't vote, because they don't care. They don't care, because they don't want to be members. And they don't want to be members because of the gross ineptitude of our representatives.

I ran for SRC President, because I believed (and still do) that the SRC should ideally play a beneficial role within the university community. My goals were therefore to make the relationship between SRC and students better so that students would WANT to join the SRC, to rid the SRC of the factional politics and focus first and foremost on student issues, and to make the SRC representative of All students, whether they're paid members or not.

As the only true independent in this election, I believed that only an independent could lead the SRC without ANY of the political biases that any factional leader would have. Do we honestly believe that Nick Wood could have a meeting with say, Charlie Perrotet (new leader of the USYD Liberals) and actually feel that as SRC President he is representing Charlie to the best of his ability? Similarly, if Tom Watson were elected SRC President, could we honestly believe that he'd be able to say he represented Pepperspray Paddy Gibson to the best of his ability?

I made the deal with Choice because I believe that an SRC comprised of both left-wing and right-wing is the ONLY way to have an effective student organisation that represents student interests. The CHOICE & RESOLVE coalition truly meant that left-wingers and right-wingers were working together, because for all intents and purposes, I AM a left-winger, as are the other RESOLVE candidates and the rest of the Committee that governed our ticket.

Also, CHOICE were the only ones who were willing to listen to what I had to say. I desperately wanted NOLS or Keep Left to make an offer to me that I could reasonably accept. NOLS just told me to "fuck off" (how's That for representing students), and even my friends on Keep Left told me that even though they wouldn't even give me Preferences, I should support them and their policies so they can continue sticking it to the Liberals.

When we talk about Liberal Students, all that NOLS/Keep Left can see are Liberals. But all I see are Students, who are paying the mandatory fee and deserve as much right to representation as any other student. Even the Liberals have difficulty distinguishing between political affiliation and the fact that there Are Socialist Students. That's why as an independent I believed I was the Sensible Choice for the leadership - because only as a left-winger willing to listen to and work with right-wingers, as an impartial independent could I truly represent ALL student.

They've adopted the RESOLVE policies on the proposed Gender Issues and Equal Opportunity Officer, the proposed Student Health, Welfare and Wellbeing Officer, and a commitment to secession of affiliate campus faculties from the SRC/Union if we decide to pursue that path in future.

ANDREWQUAH&RESOLVE Policy Statement:

Representation for Students. All Students.
Gender Issues and Equal Opportunity Officer.

RESOLVE for SRC are committed to the creation of an SRC Gender Issues and Equal Opportunity Officer, who shall assume the responsibilities currently held by the Women’s, Sexuality and Sexual Harassment Officers. This role is indicative of an SRC that believes both men’s and women’s rights are human rights, and will represent students of all genders equally.

RESOLVE disagrees with the National Union of Students’ policy on the merger of a Women’s Office into other portfolios, as it is our belief that to distinguish between women’s rights and overall human rights is detrimental to the goal of achieving equality in society. The establishment of the Gender Issues and Equal Opportunity Officer is not a statement as to whether women or men hold equal standing in society, or whether we can even define people and their situation by their gender. Rather, it is representative of our aim to address all forms of inequality in society - whether it is rooted in gender or in other areas.

Actually while the Liberal Club doesn't support campaigns supporting the Falun Gong, I don't believe we're opposed to (or in support of for that matter) the group itself.

Of all the promises Choice made, I considered them all non-core promises from the beginning - EXCEPT for the opposition to Falun Gong.

There are many conflicting theories as to whether it was the group itself or the Chinese government that was responsible for these deaths.

These are people who NEED something to criticise to legitimise their own political views. They see the Chinese Government as a popular target to attack, because the Chinese are so different from their own western values that any attack, no matter how outrageous, on the Chinese is legitimate.

Falun Gong seek to destroy China, and install a man named Li Hongzhi as its leader. They are a fanatical cult, responsible for the deaths of thousands of people.

The Cult demands that followers meditate instead of medicate, so we see thousands of Chinese followers of Falun Gong dying from easily preventable diseases. Unfortunately, there are some who follow the cult So strictly that they then prevent OTHERS from accessing medication. Because the Chinese Government has taken moves to get people out of this insidious cult, Falun Gong then began burning people - first themselves, then others. The cult convinces its followers to light themselves on fire, to gain legitimacy on the World stage to show that they are "so desperate they'll burn themselves to get their message of oppression out". In reality, these people burning themselves have been brainwashed so much they knew no better. But again, they don't just burn themselves- they've even burnt random people in Tiananmen Square - all to destabilise the country and legitimise Li Hongzhi.

Maybe now you can understand why the SRC Presidency meant so much to me. Student issues are Very important to me, but the thing that has kept me at warp speed for the last three Months planning this election is a desire to save the SRC from its own inhuman policies. I cannot in good conscience stand by and allow our student representatives to make us all party to the thousands of deaths on the hands of Falun Gong. It sickens me to think that my student fees are, no matter how small, contributing to the burning deaths of people in China - and it's especially sickening since I've actually known some of the victims in person.

As long as our SRC is run by these sick and depraved people, and as long as they continue to fund Falun Gong, the deaths of those people are on OUR hands.
