John 20:22-23 When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. - JAMES 5:16

Jesus expressly empowered the disciples to retain and forgive sin on earth
These disciples are now Bishops who empower Priests!

I'm pretty sure that most bishops and priests have basically no direct relation to the disciples of Jesus, so forgive me in saying that that argument is kind of weak. I'm open to other justifications as to why they have the power to forgive sins and allow people to repent though.

John 5:22 "The Father judges no one, but has given all authority to judge to the Son."

Matthew 28:18 Then Jesus came up and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me."

Iron, John 20:22-23 is about Jesus instructing the disciples as to how people can be forgiven of sins. Receiving the Holy Spirit through FAITH is the ONLY way sins are forgiven.

2 Timothy 4:1-2 I give you a command in the presence of God and Christ Jesus, the One who will judge the living and the dead, and by his coming and his kingdom: Preach the Good News. Be ready at all times, and tell people what they need to do. Tell them when they are wrong. Encourage them with great patience and careful teaching.

You failed to address James 5:16, and the none of the verses you cite refute Iron's point in any way. Catholic priests aren't judging anyone and condemning them to hell or not. They are just glorified confession hearers, which allows spiritual healing, according to James 5:16.

I didn't fail to address James 5:16, I chose not to because it is of little relevance. Talking about one's struggles with sin to another Christian, praying for reassurance and growing spiritually from it doesn't have much to do with forgiving sins.

I thought what Iron was getting at was that bishops DO have the power to cleanse/forgive sins which they don't because sins can only be forgiven by faith in Christ and by receiving His spirit.

My dear Iron, please do not interpret that verse as "I go to Priest to confess my sins, and this PRIEST forgives me." No priest on this earth has the authority to forgive sins. Only Jesus has any power whatsoever.

Realise this according to the passage; you are relating your sins to another person, so they can pray for you, asking Jesus to forgive. In this case, the Priest (or any other brother in christ) only acts as a mediator.

Althought i am not criticising this practise, merely pointing out the facts.

They are just glorified confession hearers, which allows spiritual healing, according to James 5:16.
They are not glorified, I am sure they sin.

But spiritual healing?? I didnt know you converted moll. Thank the Lord.

You cant deny that Christ authorised his disciples to establish a Church in His name. Persuant to this, they received the Holy Spirit and gained SPECIAL POWERZ. Peter, the first in an unbroken like of ~250 Popes over 2000years, was called by Christ the 'rock' on which this Church would be built.
The Church is a greater authority on the Holy Spirit than any individual. It is the body in which Christ works through - in which he expressed that he WOULD work through. It is objective! YOU are subjective!

You're right, I can't deny that Christ authorised His disciples to establish a Church in His name. Yes they did receive the Holy Spirit and did perform miracles, however I don't see how this is relevant to priests forgiving sin?

Funnily enough, "the Church", also known as the body of Christ, is made up of Christians. The Church is God's people and NOT an expensive piece of architecture in Rome. I strongly disagree that the Church is a greater authority on the Holy Spirit than any individual. The Catholic Church has fallen by the wayside and their interpretation of the scriptures is very poor. In the words of Tyndale as he was being persecuted by the Catholic Church for TRANSLATING THE BIBLE, "If God spare my life, ere many years pass, I will cause a boy that driveth the plough shall know more of the Scriptures than thou dost."
