I just reached the point where I think I want to teach secondary school students. However I do not know the degrees, and UAI etc involved with it. I want to teach computing studies (mainly Information processes and technology and things like that) and do not know how it all works. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I tried looking it up but I don't think there's a BEd course designed solely for teaching comp science . You can do B Education (secondary:science) in usyd where you do a major studies in science (e.g. geo, bio, chem) and then you can pick another second teaching which could be computing studies.

So basically you must also be a science teacher if you want to be a computing studies teacher....that's what I gathered. The UAI for teaching is generally in the 80s in unsw and usyd, it can go as low as 50-60s in some uni (e.g. UWS). Alternatively you can do a bachelor of computing science in any uni (cutoff at around 70s) then do a graduate diploma of education for 1 yr.

you'd do design & technology, not science

the uai isn't important except to say they let anyone in

k i am in uni now doing computers teaching:
I go to ACU - strathfield and i am doing B of Teaching/B of Arts (Technology) However i am changing to a computing major.

Something important to note is going into computers teaching means that you have the following options
1. Do a computer degree then your dip ed.
2. Do a course specifically designed for computers teaching.

I would personally reccomend option 2. This means that ultimatly you are learning to teach right through uni, and not just you last year. However Option 1 means that you have a large choice of unis

The uni's that offer teaching degrees in this are:
UNCLE= B of teaching/ B of design and technology
ACU= B of Teaching/ B of arts (Computing)- This allow's you to teach computers to year 12, and you get a minor in geography, history, theology, or visual arts- great course once you get past the subjects like tech drawing
UC offers a design and technology course but i do not know if this covers computing too
Is is possible to have computing studies as your only teaching subject or will you need to have a second area that you teach also?

CSU has an IT teaching major with secondary teaching, but you'd need to specialise in something else. Most people that are good at IT pair it with maths or science.

That is about what I thought. The OP should probably keep that in mind when choosing a course, that's all - if he chooses the computing degree + diped option make sure that he does enough subjects in another area to have a second teaching subject.

I have met quite a few computing teachers who teach junior maths as a sideline. Most people who teach senior high school maths don't teach other areas, though.
