Hi,

I'm deciding between modern or French continuers/extension for my hsc in 2016.

Does modern scale well and can you achieve 99.95 with this subject?

Also do u need to write tons of essays????

Does French scale better or worse than history?

Thanks :)

You can get a 99.95 ATAR with almost any subject combination and often students who do Modern History are in the group that achieve that ATAR.

It scales well for a humanities subject.

You have to write the following in the exam:

1 short response based on sources
1 longer response based on sources
1 10 marker analysing sources
1 10 marker on the life of a personality
1 15 marker analysing the same personality
1 25 mark essay on a national study
1 25 mark essay on an international study

There are also between 5 and 10 MC (if 5 then the first two above will add to 10 - the MC and the source based written answers add to 15 marks in total).

French Continuers scales very well, especially French extension, which is up there with Latin extension and 4 unit maths.

Personally, I found French Continuers easier than Modern. For French Continuers, it's just a 10 minute French convo, a listening task, writing up letters and postcards in French, and answering questions on a French document with the AID OF A FRENCH DICTIONARY! In French Continuers, you don't need to remember as much content as Modern History (it is a lot of, no, wait, in fact, it is a ridiculous amount of content to absorb in MH, and they can ask you anything in the exam!). Also, quite frankly you can learn Modern History through your own reading or watching of documentaries on youtube or on the History Channel if you have Foxtel. So, if you're proficient in French and find learning a new language stimulating, do French instead of MH, I'd say.

I don't know about French Extension though, but in chatting with people who have done it, it is an extremely difficult course, but they've changed the syllabus for it now, so it may be easier (a film instead of a ridiculously hard book 'Jean de Florette'). Go on the French forum and ask if you're interested about this.
