its probably 16% of the people who get a UAI that get +90. but 10% of the people who did the SC.
Yep.

Thats a pretty crappy system....Why do they count SC and HSC?
Otherwise, the mark we get will be low because we don't count those people. If you really got 99 UAI in HSC this year, it will be like 98.4 back then. If you got 90 UAI, that's like 84 UAI.

But I don't think that's the main reason. The main reason would be to compare you with everyone. (including people who may have left). It shows your relative position.

To expand on this last point - you would want to be compared to your entire cohort, not just the students who completed year 12. It would give employers a better idea of how you sit in society as a whole.
Yeah. That's what my teacher told me who got some really low UAI back then. He told me it's higher these days.

It's quite skewed. It's about 16% of the state who get 90 UAI. 10% get over 95 UAI.
Can I see where you got this from?
I'm not doubting what you said, I just want to read further into it.

Let me find it somewhere. If I can find it, I will make sure I post it up here.

It seems a little retarded though. Because some people do shit in SC, but pull their finger out for HSC and do pretty well?

SC is not a very clear indicator of your academic performance in general.

Yeah, that was sort of my point. I'm pretty lost when it comes to marking the HSC, I can't quite get my head around the system, but I don't understand how they can count the SC cohort aswell, especially when as you said, its not a very good indicator?
I'm pretty glad I didn't have to come up with the HSC marking system though, because no matter what you do, you can't really please everyone. And it's quite hard to make it fair!

There you go. Have a look. It shows you the relationship between UAI and the percentile of students where you belong. :)

Hey, could someone check to see if I can reach my goal of 95+ UAI with these current half yearly marks?

English Ad: =3/69, 81%
Maths Ad: 1/39, 100%
Maths 3U: 1/19, 90%
English 3U: 2/9, 80%
Japanese Cont.: 3/12, 82%
Physics: 4/15, 90%
Economics: 2/15, 89%

My school is ranked in the range of 420th to 440th :(
Would you be ranked first in your year with that?

I reckon you have a good chance of 95 UAI. :)

Despite coming top 5 in most of subjects, I am surprised that you aren't ranked first. That's just like my exact scenario. I guess there are always people better than us, eh? We just have to strive to beat them in the end where it really matters.

if im coming in top 20 for all my subjects with a couple top threes (ext english and sdd) - and something like 12th for english adv, 20th 2u maths, cant remember the others - is it likely i could get about 90? my school was ranked 127th last year.

Yea it is interesting. There always seems to be a person or two coming 1st in pretty much all of there subjects. Im top 3 in all of my subs and I'm pretty sure I'm not in the top 3 of my year.:bomb:

hey Namu:)

Can you share your knowledge on this?
What would the Dux get (assuming he/she gets 90+% in all his/her 10U) if they went to the following schools?

a school ranked between:
1-10
11-50
50-100
100-200
200-300
300-400
500-600
600-700
700-800

i'm not sure if the list goes on but this will do , tanks in advance :).

700-800 80+ ?

Rough estimation, by no means the statistically correct answer.

A Dux of school does not have to get all band sixes. If you assume they ALL get band 6s, then there will be little difference between the Dux from the top school and bottom school lol, only difference will be the mere scaling of subjects.

Agreed. And if you look at some of the worse performing schools youll see that they only have a few credits (less than 5), suggesting that the dux didnt get band sixes in 10 units

1-10 = 100 UAI VERY likely with 99.95/99.90 being common

11-50 = 100 UAI likely with few 99.5+ and many 99+

50-100 = 100 UAI is rare. But some schools really manage it (like Cherrybrook Technology). Few 99+

100 - 200 = 99+ UAI. 100 UAI extremely unlikely. But I have seen two schools getting people with 100 UAI. In fact, St Patrick's College Strathfield had two people getting 100 UAI in 2004. That's awesome. Few 99+

200-300 = 99-96 UAI. No 100 UAI, I reckon

300-400 = 97-90 (varies)

400-500 = 95-85 (varies)

500 - 700 = 90 below.

That's what I reckon.
