i went from getting say about 12 to getting 20/20 for my essays. i dont think i have any techniques as such, its just learning the style and format they want
sit down with your teacher and get them to go through the basic format of the essays that will score you high marks, and try to apply that format to your own essays. after you master this you can sorta start to twist and manipulate it to suit yourself.
also, buy a really really good thesaurus. but dont just use huge words coz they look good, coz a lot of the time they will have a similar meaning to your base word, but not actually fit in the context you want to use it.

Intro: A brief outline on what you are gonna talk about. MAKE SURE YOU ANSWER THE QUESTION!!

Body: A deeper analyse. Topic sentence that outlines what you are gonna talk about. Present arguments. Support it (preferably with integrated quotes), then place more arguments that deal with the quotes and stuff. Conclude sentence summarise that point you are trying to say

Conclusion: Summarise all your points. Re-answer the question of your essay

Make sure!! only one point per paragraph, and have equal amount of info in each paragraph.

Hey!

Ask your Englsih teacher to give you an essay question every week that is related to the work you are currently doing, and write the essay. Hand it in and let them mark it, then discuss what you could have improved on. Write the essay again until you obtain the marks you want.

Continue this with new essay questions every week or so until the HSC etc.

It will work. And I'm sure your teacher wouldn't mind beacuse, after all they are there to assist you in every way possible

The structure is the same as in High school, and if you got good marks for essays in high school then you don't need to worry about structuring.
The problem is that at UNI they just expect a whole lot more from you, content wise. Research essays from as many sources as you can (but make sure they are very credible-they assassinate you if you cite some random internet page, even if the information is correct). Debate every point you make from different points of view, with statistical information and results from research studies and stuff. Just explaining a point through your own common sense is 100% unacceptable, no matter how obvious. And yeah...just generally make it a lot more technical!
Also-learn to make points very succinctly, because in all my essay writing experiences they expect you to put a whole lot of info into a very tight word count. Thats the hardest thing for me-to figure out exactly what parts I need, and what other perfectly relevent stuff I am able to cut out without throwing half my marks away.
