Re: Choosing between Burgmann and Ursula

im totally for people getting involved. Its a great uni, theres heaps of great people. The ra put on events so you can meet everyone and socialise. It's been awesome. With 1500+ teens needing something to do, theres always something on.

You're actually obligated to take the accomodation no matter what. Acceptance of the application is an automatic contract, viable for 3 years. Were you not to provide rent, then legal action would be inevitable with considerable fines and a possible jail sentence.
Hope this helps. :)

not supplied, but many people have them. most people, probably. you can pick one up second hand when you get to uni just by keeping an eye out on the ANU classifieds or on your college's message board. there are always a couple on sale, around $50-100ish.

some people have small TVs in their room - my friend has one in his room so we can play Wii on it :D

all of the colleges should have a common room type place or two or three, where there are large TV(s), possibly connected up to foxtel.

you'll find at college that you spend a lot less time watching TV than you used to. not that many people have TVs in their room. however, most people are connected up to the student network and so download new TV shows onto their computer and watch them there. the common room TVs are more commonly used for watching sports than anything else.

AS per above, last semester i only watched about 20 hours (max) of tv. Back at home (before i went to uni) i would watch at least 3 hours a night. And that wasn't because they tv was always in use, there was always something to do - even if it was just go out with the boys or something.

I think all the colleges have fox. Well i know ursies/johns/bruce does.

(just adding onto humpgdogg's posts)
If you're @ B&G, each person is supplied with a locked fridge shelf.
If you're at johns, ursies etc (i dont know about the other halls sorry), they usually have hallway fridges where you can leave stuff.
A few of my mates have fridges, they are sometimes really useful (if not too bulky).
Remember, you dont actually have to cook, so the fridge will be for alcohol, juice, and the occasional uneaten pizza lol.

My advice (if you dont already own a fridge) is to wait until you get down here and see if you actually need one. After a year, im still undecided. I would only want a super small one lol, to hold my milk for the occasional late night teas lol
hope this helps

in reply to unco's pm (i see no need for it to be private, really):

all the colleges at ANU are connected through DC; that is, using Direct Connect, users from all colleges can download things off each other. basically, most people at college will share files on the student network using a DC client. then you can download off anyone. however, the download speed is only extremely fast (1-10 mb/s) if you're downloading off someone from your own college. from other colleges, the speed can vary greatly (5-500 kb/s).

people share everything on the network, from music, tv shows, movies, porn, anime, games, programs, lecture notes, ebooks... the list goes on.

to my knowledge, most colleges at big unis in australia have a student network like this. my friend at monash certainly does, anyway...

Answer = anything you like, or have handy. Colours FTW. Pink, blue, white, purple, shiney etc whatever floats your boat. Probably best to get it now rather than later. I remember the 40 person queue at lincraft to get a toga lol.

In my case i had a cut up white bed sheet, unfortunatly i had cut it too small without trying it on lol. It was so small i had to wear footy shorts underneath lol. But yeah, i found some string, for a little belt sort of thing to stop it from falling off, and i had a blue flowery thing on my head.

Wear whatever you have handy, and don't spend heaps of money. The idea of a uni student is to be tight on funds, and lots of improvisation.

A place to stash your id/money would be convenient :p

PS - if you spend more than about $5 on a costume, your probably spending too much lol (although spandex could have multiple uses - therefore >$5) lol

I think the anu romans wear undies. this roman wears undies and footy shorts lol. With such a small toga, there was a very high chance of it falling off lol

hahaha thats why as soon as he posted it, i pmed him to remove it off this public forum.

I think its a case of "what we dont know won't hurt us". And because the network is all internal and doesnt connect with the internet they don't really mind. The DOI (dept of information) have been known to block students from the network who connect to the internet (and upload large amounts of data) while sharing because it is suspicious and attracts attention.
I think id go insane without my downloads. *hugs 500GB HDD*

Edit - From now on, it might be best if nobody directly "quotes" humphdogg's message. Both of us will answer "the network" related questions via pm.
