Why if the shoe fits wear it.... Ild have to agree with Seraph are you trying to say that women should have been doing the slave labour, and men doing the slave cooking
Well im not saying that. Seraph is actually syaing that you are saying that.

Im saying black men were oppressed due to their race, not their gender.

Anyway in America they have days and month for black heritage.

Cherryblossom's insight is something to be desired, katie tully.

International Women's Day should be used to highlight the plight of women in less stable countries where forced prostitution, sex slavery and a number of terrible acts are commited against innocent women.

For those women, that's why we IWD.

Abolish it indeed, katie tully.
And you really think "International Womans Day" applies to people in third world nations, as if they'd know it exists? Did you read who is getting honored in this day, and who it's for? I didn't see much mention of anybody I'd consider worthy. Even the organisers don't give a shit about the women in third world countries.

Make it an International Day of Recognition for Oppressed Women in third world nations.

Or it's more a "thank goodness I don't live there" and give a few bucks to ease their plight slightly.

BARGH how unbelievable is this thread?

Firstly, the negative feedback about feminism. What's wrong with it? Are you taking feminism to the far extreme, and thinking of feminazi butch lesbians? That want to take over the world and make men their slaves?

What's WRONG with you people?

Phanatical I already know will talk about the different types of feminism, but when it comes to the MOST COMMON and MOST PRACTICED type of feminism, is the belief that women and men are equal. Not superior to the other.

It's practiced by every election day, every time a woman goes to work or school, or when someone decides to listen to what a woman says. Because it didn't USE to be that way, and we're lucky that the women's movement happened, because the women of the present day have the CHOICE to be a house-wife or go and have a career (or try to tackle both, that's another story).

The reason why people think feminism no longer has a place, is because people have the dillusional idea that women and men are now DEFINATLEY equal. Which wouldn't be the case, and even though it sounds like a fantasy world, I don't personally think we can ever be equal considering there are issues that concern men as well, such as Parental Rights (yes Phanatical I added the father's rights over a child = unfair.) While women are still tapping at the glass ceiling that are still existant in some corporate ladders. It's not as extreme as it use to be, I know. But it's there.

The fact that women running half naked in mainstream rap videos rated G or PG is a concern. The fact that 50 cent can talk about beating up women in the streets without it being censored is a concern. Although it's much better than it use to be.

I'd like to consider myself lucky that the women's movement happened. Which is WHAT International Women's Day is for. I'm thankful.

I'm glad I can vote.

I'm glad that I can have the freedom to choose to have a career or not.

I'm glad that I can be respected (at some places) as the person as I am, and not shut down and told to keep quiet because I am a woman.

And I'm sure most of you other women are too.

I agree that women USE to be suppressed much more than they did today, but I am hell thankful that it's improved.

Women could vote in Australia before the feminist movement came aobut, and women were on the workforce before feminism too, so what has feminism done?

which part of the workforce?

and which movement are you talking about, cuz there were a few...

if you really think feminism has done nothing, and feminism had nothing to do with the women's movement (ie the belief that men and women are equal) then I guess we live in seperate worlds!

In WW2 women had to be part of the workforce since all the men where at war.

The earliest femminist movement? Try the early Roman Empire.

It developed greatly around the 19th centuary, espically Marxist Femminists.

foundations is a real doozer so far
but we've got two america bashing oppertunities coming up which ought to rile the feathers of the left wing idealists - david hicks and UN/Iraq. I wonder if I should question the legality of the Afghan war? I could outleft the lefties ;)
Heh, you have to love law at Sydney. Yeah, foundations isn't amazing, but the law faculty is pretty good here, and from what I've heard from transferees from Sydney law (and there are a couple) it shits all over the teaching at Sydney.

Asian Studies on the other hand...
I dont know how many fucking chumps with fluent Cantonese are doing Chinese, but it's at least a quarter...

y do u h9 msn now :(

or did you just change your nick and i cant find it anymore? *shrug* The teaching so far (i.e. two tutorials, one which was an introduction) was OK, my tute group is OK but kange's is full of idealists, i hear.....sep. At least they'll be interesting when Kirby/Ruddock come in to talk :)..............i'll take pics.

USYD is also packed with a variety of "this outlet would not be here without USU" and "I love USU" signs. I'm tempted to enquire why they couldn't just charge more to offset the union contributions but I'm afraid USU might actually stand for university of sydney union upon questioning. >_>

Don't spread misinformation. If you hear that a common word has been formed from an acronym, 99% of the time it's wrong.

<3 leetom, I've always loved you :p

It's very unfortunate that women are living in appalling conditions married off and being raped as children getting HIV deprived of basic health and education, infant mortality rate let's put it this way starting from 15 the women have one kid a year and 7 of them may survive to the age of 5 etc etc while you're sitting on your ass proclaiming cynicism *WHERE'S THAT GODDAMN EMOTICON*

gee, you really are an asshole.
But those issues do not just exist among the females.

15 is an old age to have the first child. Often they will miscarry the first, and damage they're reproductive tract, leading to urine continually dripping out. So they are forgotten about and forced away.

Sorry, i read on another thread that that is were golf came from, they also had a link, so how do u know that urs is accurate
Becase snopes is the most respected urban legend source available on the net? Because golf was invented in Scotland, meaning that naming it after an acronym of English words would be completely illogical?
Because early references to golf in English texts have up to six variations of the spelling, making the acronym theory once again illogical?

Post the link from the other thread if you want to argue reliability of sources. Simply having a link proves little. You need a link to a reliable site.

Yes having a link needs to be reliable, but how can a commercial site be considered reliable, it wouldnt fly in uni
