BARGH how unbelievable is this thread?
Firstly, the negative feedback about feminism. What's wrong with it? Are you taking feminism to the far extreme, and thinking of feminazi butch lesbians? That want to take over the world and make men their slaves?
What's WRONG with you people?
Phanatical I already know will talk about the different types of feminism, but when it comes to the MOST COMMON and MOST PRACTICED type of feminism, is the belief that women and men are equal. Not superior to the other.
It's practiced by every election day, every time a woman goes to work or school, or when someone decides to listen to what a woman says. Because it didn't USE to be that way, and we're lucky that the women's movement happened, because the women of the present day have the CHOICE to be a house-wife or go and have a career (or try to tackle both, that's another story).
The reason why people think feminism no longer has a place, is because people have the dillusional idea that women and men are now DEFINATLEY equal. Which wouldn't be the case, and even though it sounds like a fantasy world, I don't personally think we can ever be equal considering there are issues that concern men as well, such as Parental Rights (yes Phanatical I added the father's rights over a child = unfair.) While women are still tapping at the glass ceiling that are still existant in some corporate ladders. It's not as extreme as it use to be, I know. But it's there.
The fact that women running half naked in mainstream rap videos rated G or PG is a concern. The fact that 50 cent can talk about beating up women in the streets without it being censored is a concern. Although it's much better than it use to be.
I'd like to consider myself lucky that the women's movement happened. Which is WHAT International Women's Day is for. I'm thankful.
I'm glad I can vote.
I'm glad that I can have the freedom to choose to have a career or not.
I'm glad that I can be respected (at some places) as the person as I am, and not shut down and told to keep quiet because I am a woman.
And I'm sure most of you other women are too.
I agree that women USE to be suppressed much more than they did today, but I am hell thankful that it's improved.
