Have you heard, bigpond is planning to offer 100mbps download speeds. Visit Whirlpool Broadband News to view the discussion which is located in the bigpond section

100mpbs will download a gig fairly quickly
Well not everyone is gonna get 100mbps, it depends on your wiring, location, etc...
and expect it to be heaps expensive
but its a step in the right direction :)

Lol hahahaha

But seriously, we (Australia) have a bad internet connection speed compared to the USA and ASIA... I think it was Kevin Rudd that was going to increase our speed, but the problem was that it would cost way to much... Like $200 a month.
He's still doing that, total project cost about $50 billion i think, will be spent over like 5 years, again i think. We need a direct T1 connection or something, i heard they get you 1gig in 5 minutes.

Australia has some of the worst internet infrastructure in all developed nations. Speed and cost wise

The problem is; if Rudd eventually finishes the 'upgrade' other countries might have upgraded even further :(

It was going to happen, but Telstra basically told him to fuck off. Not sure why, but yeah..

I'm currently attending university in New Zealand (for a change) and I will never complain about Australian internet after this.

Cost in through the roof, speed in ridiculously low, as are download limits.

Not to mention mobile broadband, which I used mainly in Australia. I could pay $30 for 2GB in AU on prepaid, here is is like $50 for 250mb. They all think this is reasonable.

Density wise - USA is bigger than us but we still pay more than them and also Canada... also the UK too and our currency is batshit compared to them but in the end its still cheaper than here

1) Most of US/Canada will be accessing US websites, so traffic is mostly internal. Aussies will also be accessing mostly US websites, and traffic has to run much further through under-water fiber optics - costs go up.

2) The majority of costs involved with broadband is the physical equipment. In US/Canada, the relatively high density mean relatively higher demand, hence return is higher than Aus, where low density restricts return. As a result, prices are lowered in US, while need to remain high in Aus, to break even.

Under water optics? Excuse my ignorance but I thought interwebs is via satalite when leaving Australia? You tell me we have optics running under the ocean from here to the US and I'll punch you for being so fucking stupid.

Be more specific.
If you all want to know why we have a fairly shit, expensive system is because there was no investiment until recently; even though we have some higher connection speeds, we're behind much of the world. Once the optic system is installed, we'll be up there with the fastest but by the time 8 years has passed, I think we'll need to upgrade once again because a new system of information transfer will be installed in Korea and USA.

I need to agree with the individual who stated NZ has a shit and expensive system, my was there on business last year and she said she paid $180.00 for 1GB of pre-paid wireless.

Excuse me Bacilli, but after reading your post, it seems I know a LOT more than you about how the information-communications sector runs, so don't argue with me.

Do you have any idea how expensive that would be?

Pipe Networks - laying of new underwater fiber optic link from Sydney to Guam:
PPC-1 Progress

This link will be wholesaled, which will significantly reduce broadband prices in Australia. Currently, most of the submarine links are owned by Telstra (Hellstra).

While that is somewhat true, the more significant factor limiting broadband capacity in Australia is the relatively low population density, as I have explained in my previous post.

Bacilli got owned.

Internet here is also overpriced. Japan/korea/china (i think) only for the for speed. Their internet is unlimited. whilst we pay for both speed and bandwidth ==

US also used to only sell speed, but recently people have been abusing the unlimited bandwidth, so now they've introduced caps.

With Japan/korea/china, I think 99% of all traffic will stay within their respective countries.
As a result, they pay ~$40 a month for 100mbit fiber, and download 300GB+ a month. Just for fun, compare that with Telstra (Hellstra). $40 will get you 1.5mbit ADSL, with a whopping 0.4GB cap! Not to mention the $150 excess usage charge for every GB you go over...
