So it keeps happening, American soldiers commiting heinous crimes in Iraq; an attempt an liberation I suppose. They also attempt to cover it up so something tells me not all incidents surface in the media... <3 America.

Graphic evidence in US troops' rape and murder trial

8.45am Monday August 7, 2006
By Simon Usborne

An Iraqi medic has provided graphic testimony against four American soldiers who stand accused of raping a 14-year old Iraqi girl and killing three of her relatives.

The US military hearing in Baghdad is expected to last several days and will decide whether there is sufficient evidence to take the case to a court martial.

The medic, who was not named for his own safety, told the hearing he was the first to arrive at a house in Mahmoudiya, south of Baghdad after the 12 March attack.

He said he found the girl, Abeer Qassim al-Janabi, lying naked in the house, her torso and head burned.

She had a single bullet wound beneath her left eye.

In the next room, he said he found the body of Abeer's sister, Hadeel, the back of her head blown out by a bullet.

Qassim and Fikhriya, the children's parents, were also dead, their mother's torso riddled with bullets.

After witnessing the scene, he said he was ill for weeks.

Sergeant Paul Cortez, Specialist James Barker, Private Jesse Spielman and Private Bryan Howard face charges of rape and murder.

According to an FBI affidavit, the men changed into civilian clothes after a drinking session and walked to the victims house, just 200 metres from their military checkpoint in a Sunni Arab area south of Baghdad.

After carrying out the attack the soldiers are accused of setting fire to the victim's body in an organised attempt to cover their tracks.

Steven Green, also accused of taking part in the attack but no longer in the US army, was arrested in North Carolina in June and has pleaded not guilty to a federal court.

He is being held without bond.

Sergeant Anthony Yribe is charged with failing to report the attack but is not alleged to have taken part.

Mindful that any perceived leniency will strain relations with the newly elected Iraqi government, US officials have assured Iraqis that the accusations will be taken seriously and that if found guilty, the four soldiers will be severely punished.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has demanded an independent investigation.

Reporters are prevented from observing the hearing and the witnesses' identities are being kept secret for fear they could be targeted by insurgents for collaborating with US authorities.

But on Sunday, after the secret testimony of two other witnesses, reporters were allowed in to hear the medic's account.

Military prosecutors showed the man a series of gory images of the crime scene to confirm whether the bodies were in the same position as when he entered the house.

Defence attorneys alleged the photos were staged and questioned whether the victims were already dead when they were sprayed with American bullets.

The lawyer for one of the soldiers - James Barker - said the soldiers' behaviour was influenced by the stressful environment in the Mahmoudiya area - known as the "Triangle of Death".

If a court martial is given the go ahead and the soldiers are then found guilty, those accused of murder could face the death penalty.

The case is the latest in a series of alleged atrocities that have undermined American efforts to quell the violent insurgency in Iraq.

Two US military inquiries have been investigating the alleged massacre of 24 Iraqi civilians by US marines in the town of Haditha.

Four other American soldiers are accused of murdering three Iraqi detaines near Samarra in May.

Earlier this month a military prosecutor called the men "war criminals" as he called for them to face a court martial but a hearing ended on Friday without a decision on any future trial.

In another case, seven US marines and a navy sailor are accused of killing a disabled Iraqi man in Hamdaniya four months ago.

Depressing. We've got hooligans holding M16 assault rifles in Iraq. The thing is, there isn't much stopping people doing these kind of things. I'm surprised this even got out.

yeah, I think shit like this happens on a far more frequent basis than we are let on to believe. but i think some incidents are deliberately leaked to give an appearance of transparency, like as if we are told the full details of whats going on there.

I mean, in our western civilisation, we are conditioned to believe that non westerners are an inferior life form. Think about it, you feel far more sympathy when 1 American has been killed, than when 10 Afghans or Iraqi's have been killed. I'm sure to a lot of the soldiers, its not that big a deal if some Iraqi's are "offed"

I think America lets these isolated cases get out, so people don't start digging around and start finding out that incidents like this happen on a systematic basis, which I think they do.

Just today in the newspaper I read that some CIA contractor beat the shit out of a detainee to death. He got charged with assault, depite the detainee dying, and despite the detainee reported to have begged to be shot to end the pain, as well as suffering amongst other injuries a fractured pelvis from kicks to the penis and testicles, which prevented him from urinating.

I don't think that's an entirely accurate picture. I do think there are alot of people in the American military, even high-ranking people, whom look into such cases diligently... but it's a war zone, such investigations are not simple and there are people out there that will attempt to cover some of them up.

It has nothing to do with conditioning imho. It is natural to care more about people that you feel have more in common with you than those whom seem different. I also don't really like the way you point the blame at 'western civilisation', it hints at an anti-western bias.

There are bad people all throughout society. I think america has somewhat cleaned up its' act with reguards to such crimes from how they were in vietnam, but I suppose history will tell.

ok fair points you probably expressed what I was trying to express with more eloquence and in a more thought out way

I agree a lot of the people would be ok, but i'm sure they'd have a lot of trailer trash dudes in their army too

Rape: make love andwar

Ok its bad but this sort of shit goes on in all wars. Americas army is not conscription based. Most people who sign up do it because they want to defend their country, they want to travel, or they cant get any other jobs. Some people do it because they have an unhealthy obsession with guns and are psychopaths that want to kill people. Its kind of hard to avoid these people in a service that promotes killing others.

Truly digusting behavour, i hope if they did it that they get life in prison.

Geez, you're a smart cookie arent ya. The terrorists, as you so appropiately put it, are so because they do not do the "right" - which is what your view should be anyway. How can the acts of terrorists be put up against this? Oh wait, are you saying that the US is the same as terrorists?

Point taken, however the US military has a habit of painting a "flawless" and "angelic" image as they only target the enemy not innocent civilians. Now apart from such disgusting incidents (this and Abu Gharib)- what happens when these psychopaths takes it to the fields? Who monitors that? Is it not possible that these psychopaths are careless in their operations which can be easily excused by equally psychopath generals? I'd say its totally possible and goes a fair way to explain civilian casualty during the war though the suicide has taken over nowadays... =\

This also goes for Israel- while the government spokesperson (far from the battlefield) is preaching that they only target the enemy- whose to know that there arent any bloodthirsty hooligans just demolishing everything at his discretion (especially when his blood probably boils at the utterance of muslims). Its a common military tactic- "build hate towards the enemy = better offensive = less sympathy = hardneded heart = more prone to cruelty."

These things happen in warfare when soldiers are put into situations they don't know how to deal with. This definately doesn't excuse their actions, what they did was heinous and inexcuseable. The same deal happened in Vietnam with My Lai, etc.

Ultimately, responsibility for any harm that comes from the occupation rests on the shoulders of GW Bush and others who actually made the decision to invade and occupy Iraq. When you put poorly educated troops in a stressful, hostile environment and then engender them with anti-Arab sentiment, these results are predictable.

Sepulchres, what you said about soldier morale is spot on. You have to make the soldiers angry enough (and stupid enough) to give purpose to what they are doing.

agreed

Yes I do feel sorry for those that commit such acts as a result of becoming totally screwed in the head from the exposure to a warzone for so long.

A premeditated act like this suggests that there was already some ingrained issues within these soldiers before Iraq, which I think has to be distinguished from the countless times edgy and paranoid soldiers have fired on random civilians
