there is both extreme right wing and extreme left wing
extreme right wing is fascist
extreme left is communist
both australian political parties are around the middle, labor leans more to the left whilst libs are more to the right
well, that's my understanding anyway.

Actually, the Liberals are quite right economically, but I'd say in regards to social reform they are moderates.

I'm going got keep this post bi-partisan. Economically speaking a right winger generally favours minimising the involvement of the government in day to day life, for both ideological beliefs and in the belief that small governments operate much more efficiently. For example, minimising taxation and moving towards a user pays system. Progressive right wingers favour economic liberalisation, i.e.: the removal of trade barriers and micro-economic reform.

Left wingers on the other hand tend to hate their fellow man (bi-partisan? =P). They feel an inadequacy within themselves and thus champion the causes of those they see as being shunned by society (aboriginals, homosexuals etc). There is no cause, that a leftist won't follow.

Economically leftists believe in robbing Peter to pay Paul. ideally a leftist is interested in minimising or eliminating inequality. This has the added "bonus" of entrusting all power to the government, since of course the only wealth to pay for investments in capital etc is held by the government.

Leftists love impotent NGO's like the UN, but hate globalisation. Leftists love protectionism and unionism and hate the thought of free trade. Leftists hate economic reform, and be damned if economic reform is the only way to improve living standards. Leftists hate Jews. Leftists are impotent, yet aggressive, take for example hiphophooray's wonderful comparison of Liberal voters to "gang rapists". Leftists like to label their socially regressive ideas as progressive whilst forgetting that it's all been tried (and failed) before.

Leftists like to think that the world is against them, but the world is just laughing at them.

A year ago i had no idea what left-wing and right-wing meant. Then i had a modern history lesson about the political parties in 1920s Germany. It cleared up a lot of things.

I reckon lefties dont like globalisation because it favours the wealthy countries and makes the income gap worse. They are also against all the trans-national corportions (nike, mcdonalds, etc) because they exploit cheap human labour and make huge profits. The lefties want to increase the equality of life and reduce the income gap throughout the world.

The fact that lefties hate Jews may apply in come cases but here are some facts.
1. The Russian communist revolution in 1917 involved a large number of Jews who were close to Lenin.
2. Karl Marx was a Jew
3. The Nazis (extreme right wing) despised the Jews

In regards to controversial issues, right-wingers are against gay marriage, abortion, etc while left-wingers generally support these issues.

Not necessairly. Social issues are viewed differently to the left and right wings now days.

For example the extreme sides of both are generally very close socially.

Hence why you occasionaly see two axis. Economic, left and right. Social, authoritarian and liberal.

Generally speaking the Liberals are liberal economically, allowing for free trade etc.

Right wingers are more likely to be on the authoritarian side, left wingers on the liberal, with left wingers having a greater range (excluding outliers).

Just on the globalisation point, 'mainstream lefties' tend to be opposed to the current system of preferential trading networks and apparent corporate excesses... They aren't opposed to the general idea of globalisation itself.

Edit: The corporate excesses point appears to be too vague... Oh well, I guess that it covers a variety of opinions.

What i fail to understand is how hiphiphooray has become the spokesperson for the entire leftest ideology. I blame capitalism, too much OC brainwashing.

OC brainwashing? :p
meanwhile... neo darling, you might want to be just a touch less extreme in your anti-left views, the point of this thread is, after all to explain the difference between left and right, not bash either side.
But on to the point:
Right = liberals/family first/etc.
They tend to be more economic in their policies and conservative with regards to social issues. They also tend towards free trade, and a user pay system, in which people pay for their own health care, education etc. Also tend to be for privatisation, and profits
Left=Labor/democrats/greens/etc.
Tend to be more health/education based policy-wise. They believe that everyone should have the right to health care and education provided by the government, either cheaply, or at no charge. Generally more opposed to free trade, also against the privatisation of health education etc. In theory they are also supposed to be more forward thinking with regards to social issues like gay marriage, although this is not always the case.

so anyways, that's how I see it :)

Left and Right wing is essentially the difference between government-based economic policy and private-based economic policy. The other talk about causes (queer collectives, women's collectives, aborigine rights collectives usually without any aborigine members) are usually run by people who identify with the left-wing, but are not necessarilly tied to their economic beliefs. That's why there are left-wing people who oppose abortion, and right-wing people who believe in saving the forests.

a show i despise, even loathe, has brainwashed me?

so if leftest ideology is closely related to communism, why do you blame capitalism?

according to some net test i am centrist.
