Nearly every book I borrow from the library is full of underlining, scribbling, highlighting and just general academic graffiti.

Although I admit to sometimes underlining lightly in pencil because I figure if everyone else can do it, I will too.

But it does shit me sometimes because occasionally parts of the book are so heavily underlined and scribbled over that I can't actually read what it says.

So...what's the proper etiquette here? should I underline then rub it out myself, or just leave my markings there as a happy surprise for the next person who borrows the book?

(General rants about the library are also welcome. Another particular issue I have is the hidden bump in the carpet on level 4 that I trip over each and every single time I'm in there.)

I'd use pencil, rub out most of it, unless it's something that everyone SHOULD REALLY SEE. If they're going to borrow it for the same purpose, they may as well learn it themselves rather than reading what someone else thought was important.

*shrugs*

I still don't know where anything is if I needed to borrow it

I'm trying to type up notes from a book I have in front of me at the moment, and I'm all confused because I can't remember which underlining is mine and which isn't. :/

You're a first year. You're supposed to be clueless. And stop taking my favourite desks (and yes I do have favourite desks in the library).

Well I would never write on other people's property. But if you are just scribing something in pencil guess that will be okay since if someone didn't like it you they can remove it.
Borrowing commerce textbooks from the library tend to have plenty of chinese translations on the side...

With the tripping over thing, you can always report it to OHS (http://www.riskman.unsw.edu.au/) but they made the process so tedious that most people would rather die before filling out one of their forms :)

Too bad the auditing thing is over, but last year UNSW was audited for quality and they had a suggestion section where everyone can just complain about anything. I was bored and complained about the crappy keyboards in the commerce labs most of which were impossible to touch type on and guess what there's new keyboards in all the commerce labs this year.

Haha :( I know all :(

And I don't use the library desks, the only ones I've used have been the ones outside the lifts on level 7, on two separate mornings, both of which I was too tired to actually do anything and just flicked through the questions but did nothing.

I have an issue with level 8 in general. Is Level 8 not meant to be a silent floor? Yes? Well then can someone please explain why it's constantly filled with annoying chatter. I blame law students.

I find it impossible to find anything in the Library. I basically just take the first three digits of the call number and walk around until I find the book because the specific numbers are useless. And the study area on level three at the back is basically the only place I can ever find that is free to study. Hence, im always there. And for some reason it seems to be really hard to motivate yourself to study in the library. I sometimes just sit there, reading the questions and cannot motivate myself to actually start. It's wierd...
Honestly it's not that difficult. You follow the signs on the ends of each row and go from there. If you can't figure out the dewey system why are you even at uni?

Meh, no reason to get anal on him.

8 is supposedly a "quiet" floor. Not usually the case though... I usually stick to lvl 4 for individual study.

As for borrowing books and marking them, I've never borrowed a book from the library.
Rarara, I meant Level 7, the level with all the geos books on it, and the help desk. I've mentioned a few times before I never venture up past level 7, because above there is the faculty of law, I don't consider it to be a place a really want to go, for several reasons.

Ok, so I know I'm not at your uni, but book grafitti is something that really irks me. I would never do it, it is vandalism, but if you can take the time to underline everything, I'm sure as hell you can take the 30 seconds to rub the damn thing out before you return the book!!!

I think I have repaired three UNSW books in my life... I admit it is so hard to put paper-back boos together with just sticky tapes... pages keep falling out.

what irks me even more than that is going to uni just to borrow a book and find that it's not there even though it says 'on shelf'.

Finding books and the art of research is all a part of the BA experience.

Eventually you kinda know where the subject areas are and you just head in that direction.

Note, however, that unsw social science isn't the best. But who needs books anyways? Sprinkle your essays full of journal articles you pulled off some obscure journal.

Cameron, Deborah, 'Naming of Parts: Gender, Culture, and Terms for the Penis among American College Students', American Speech, Vol. 67, No.4, 1977, pp. 367-382.

Marcovich, Miroslav, 'Pythagoras as a cock', The American Journal of Philology, Vol. 97, 1976, pp. 331-335.

Exactly my problem. Even if I do figure out the stupid call number system ( and where on the floor that area is), the book isnt even there. And the dewey numbers go to 55million decimal places, making it all more complicated.
Naughty people go hide books. Very very annoing. Solution is to head to usyd which usually has more copies.
