I don't see what's so bad about a consumption based tax? I think it's the only fair taxation. If anything, slash the income tax especially for low income earners, raise the gst, and arbitrarily raise taxes on all expensive goods e.g. large tv tax, expensive suit tax...

Generally when applying extra tax to a particular good, it should be demonstrated that this good produces negative externalities. Luxury cars don't do this any more than other cars, so there is no justification for the extra tax.

Yeah, I agree that there are more productive sources of taxatiion they should have sought first.

If it's uniform it's fine... increasing the GST and perhaps widening the list of goods that aren't affected by it is another fine way to increase revenue imo.
