Okay, it is not a politician's role to micromanage our lives. So this internet censorship is not only severe infringement of our rights, but an attempt to micromanage our lives. Other government ideas that are trying to micromanage our lives include the proposed fat tax on junk food. Seriously, it's our job to choose what we see on the internet, it's our responsibility to decide what to eat and we don't need the government to micromanage our lives.

There is a fine line between suicide and euthanasia Graney and I'm inclined to think this flirts with it too much for a mere mortal to make a call. I for one don't think it serves society in any positive way to have pro suicide material legally published.
Fair enough. But what makes you feel so assured that abuse of power won't be an issue?
Senate estimates is the biggest reason. I don't think this kind of governing would escape the scrutiny of Senators like John Faulkner(who exist on both sides of the aisle although none is as rigorous as Faulkner) and generally given the uproar over the government trying to censor anything, if they generally started playing thought police I expect someone like Faulkner would expose them and the government would get hanged when it went to the polls.

The other thing (and don't tell anyone) but I actually like most of our politicians. There are some, like Kevin Andrews for example, who I see generally as nasty pieces of work but most of them from the local branch members up to the national presidents upward are genuinely well meaning people trying to make a positive mark on the world and who could be earning a lot more money and a lot less enemies at some major cooperation if they were so inclined. Even if you got a dodgy pm or even a dodgy cabinet I think the system generally is not dodgy and that they would get torn down. The NSW labor party is one instance I think where dodginess has really crept in and look whats happening to it.

BTW the filter is going ahead anyway.
they've delayed it to post election. if history is anything to go by, delaying a policy decision is indicative of it being shelved.

prob next year, even if abbott gets PM?
Abbott won't become prime minister I promise you that. It's not a reflection on the liberal party but of the political cycle and this government is still in its first term and this opposition, far from being focussed and diligent has changed leaders and major policies three times since John Howard.

And why are we so sure it will come in anyway? 90% of bets say the next parliament will require either Green or liberal party support for a bill to pass the senate. Do we really expect a Hockey leadership to ascent an internet censor? The Greens (aside from Hamilton) have been the biggest opponents of the filter so they wont get support from them.

You are completely ignoring the extent of Chinese censorship and the severity of the punishments which is the key difference.
fuck you seem pretty dumb so I'm gonna lay it out for you.

Chinese Internet filter
-compulsory at the backbone level;

-blocking methods: keyword blocking, dns poisoning, ip/url blocking based on a secret blacklist maintained by the government; publishing of said list forbidden by legislation

-punishment for hosting, publishing etc content blocked by the firewall: severe sentence for political dissent; for all other topics, "re-education through labor", or merely "administrative fines" if the individual is well connected.

Proposed filter
-compulsory at the backbone level.

-blocking methods: ip/url blocking based on a secret blacklist maintained by the government, talks of a legislation outlawing the disclosure of the blacklist, additional filtering methods unknown at this point.

-punishment: prosecution and long jail term for child pornography; take-down notice and fines levied by the ACMA against the hosting isp for non-child porn RC content, $10000 fines for possession of non-child porn RC content in W.A and in "prescribed areas" in N.T.

What key difference? the punishment is substantial in both countries depending on the topic in question. I think you need to look up the definitions of "similarity" and "equivalence".

I dismissed the suggestion that they would be censored content is absurd you dimwit.
Did you even read the National Classification Code you fucking moron?
As according to the Code, All films, publications etc are RC when they

(a) depict, express or otherwise deal with matters
of sex, drug misuse or addiction, crime,
cruelty, violence or revolting or abhorrent
phenomena in such a way that they offend
against the standards of morality, decency and
propriety generally accepted by reasonable
adults to the extent that they should not be
classified; or
(b) describe or depict in a way that is likely to
cause offence to a reasonable adult, a person
who is, or appears to be , a child under 18
(whether the person is engaged in sexual
activity or not); or
(c) promote, incite or instruct in matters of crime
or violence

topics like abortion/anti-abortion, homosexuality, and euthanasia are offensive to a lot of people, especially Christians and Catholics. Plus euthanasia is illegal in Australia and therefore a crime so ???

In fact, those are not the only things that are likely to be filtered. Any games rated above MA15+ are RC. Any pornography containing explicit dirty talking and sexual fetishs such as bondage, squirting and even spanking are RC. Even mainstream feature pornographic films such as Pirates are RC since they contain "sexualised violence" ie. pornstars with fake breasts fighting with fake swords on a fucking boat. What makes you think that the Code and the current Guidelines which govern the classification process in Australia will not be applied to content on the internet?

Very weak.
Yeah it is weak, but your feeble attempt at ad hominem, questioning my political empathy, or lack therefore, for an issue that I do not feel as strongly about with the hopes of invalidating my points did not give me much to start with anyway. I can't believe I even entertained that.

Cut the crap, you're just another homosexual-burning freedom-hating religious nut job, why don't you come right out and say god hates fags?

NS, shit country just got shitter.
Young man you have yet to articulate as to why we, as a community, would be better off with access to child rape videos.
Would you advocate banning the act of airing child rape footage in a public viewing space? On network television?
What makes the internet different? Because you access this material anonymously? Because you think it's a victimless crimes?
Tell us about it.

(And no I'm not ad infinitum or whoever it is you think I am)

I didn't even put forward an argument, I'm just trying to understand why you're against cracking down on child pornography.
Do you think it's a fundamental 'right' or something?

because a) it doesn't actually decrease the amount of children being abused around the world and b) the majority of those who deal in childporn through p2p and password protected compressed files on file sharing websites wont be affected at all

How exactly do you know so much about the inner workings of the child pornography trade? Perhaps you garnered this expertise from a publicly accessible website?
(I hope you see the flaw in your logic)

I know the inner workings of P2P networking, CP distribution being one of the fucked up areas are being used by such a network.
