This just makes me very, very angry not scared like their goal. How dare they attack our city and threaten to take innocent lives? They think that Australia is the land of the 'fair go' , well if this is indeed a terrorist attack I say that an attack on the people in that cafe is an attack on all of us. I hope the police shot them dead before I get to them. Let them rot in hell and we will see how long they can wave their flags for...

From a person with people she loves in Martin place.

So whilst this is going on your first thought is "I hope the media don't wrongly accuse them of being terrorists!?!!!??!!"
Well you don't know my first thought and I really do hope that nothing happens to the hostages. After all, it could have been any of our family members in the cafe.

New South Wales police have issued a statement saying they are trying to make contact with the people inside the cafe:

There is a police operation underway at Martin Place. Police and emergency services have responded and a number of streets around the area have been closed. The Martin Place train station is also shut.

Police are dealing with an armed incident and specialist officers are attempting to make contact those inside a café.

Some nearby offices have been evacuated as a precaution. Anyone else in the area encompassing Hunter, George, Elizabeth and Macquarie streets bordering Martin Place is directed to remain indoors and away from open windows. Anyone in the vicinity but outside that area is free to leave their buildings.

Police urge members of the public to remain calm and note that an appropriate police presence is in place.

Police urge the media to be responsible in their reporting. Speculation can cause unnecessary alarm.

I am seeing a lot of people tweeting/asking about the supposed police raids taking place in Lakemba at the same time as the siege. Ray Hadley, a conservative presenter with 2GB, said raids of homes in Lakemba, which has a large Muslim population, were taking place now.

Sources have told my colleague, Michael Safi, there are no raids underway in that suburb. About 20 police are touring the Lakemba mosque as part of a police induction day, which may have been the source of those reports.

Don't give a shit anymore. All this manipulated shit the news and authorities provide us with, putting islam under the spotlight almost whenever they can. A hostage situation hasn't officially happened in a while, and when it does (now), blame obviously goes on the 'suspected' Islamic state militants. Bet if there was another major terrorist attack in Sydney, organised by (i.e. non-muslims), bang, Islamic state blah blah did all this blah.

11:56am: The following sites are among those which have been evacuated:

The Channel Seven building at Martin Place
The Opera House
NSW parliamentary executive offices
The State Library
The NSW Supreme Court's criminal courts, and several city legal chambers.
Chifley Square is also reportedly in lock down. Workers in the MLC building offices are unable to leave.

Some workers are being evacuated to Hyde Park.

Pretty edgy stuff, if you pulled your head out of the sand you'd realize ISIS hasn't been blamed or even suspected for anything yet, the flag is not believed to be connected to ISIS in any way.

Our office may go into lockdown. Hopefully won't happen.
