That's right. I forgot that there was a law for everything in metal and that's it. (especially considering that according to that CoF is Norweigian.)

To weigh in here, to say that Iron Maiden is not metal is half right. They were sort of around the NWOBHM movement, but for some reason I don't classify them as that. I'd call them Power Metal. But really, they pioneered and influenced bands from so many genres that it isn't funny.

There is no band that can be classified as straight up metal - the definition of the term in recent times has become so warped and twisted that everything somehow falls into a subgenre.

Yeah, but it's School of ROCK. So it'll be based on rock.

That is the worst picture ever. Apparently Cream are metal.

Iron Maiden is definetly not power metal ;)

For power metal, take a look at bands such as Blind Guardian, Hammerfall, Kamelot, etc.

Yes, i classify Iron maiden as sounding the most like those bands than anything else, hence my description. The sound of Maiden's music extends very far into the sounds of those and many other power metal bands.

i never said it was 100% correct i was just using it as an example for legham.

and no cream aren't metal.

but they were a band that with other bands (like black sabbath) formed the basis of what was going to become metal.

thats probably why it says "early metal"

Sounds like because Power Metal was influenced by Maiden ;)

Yeah, theres a few i disagree with in that picture, but it gives a pretty general idea.
Children of Bodom aren't Thrash, Cradle Of Filth aren't Norwegian, and i thought KSE and Unearth fell under Metalcore? Or is that just another name for New Wave of American Metal?

hmm..maybe thats why metalheads should be intelligent? so they can distinguish between a ridiculously large numebr of subgenres because theres some people out there who decided that music had to be organised into categories which then had to be sorted into other categories.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=KWKgItL1xvo <-- Power Metal
http://youtube.com/watch?v=mJBBgdiVb-o <-- Viking/Death Metal
http://youtube.com/watch?v=sEWiOKSexig <-- Heavy Metal
http://youtube.com/watch?v=8fPgGTKbwJo <-- Thrash Metal
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Mqm-ystzPGY <-- Symphonic Metal
http://youtube.com/watch?v=9_F9bQPt4yU <-- Industrial Metal

So what broad category can you put that in that determines individually what each one is?

but then youre missing:
progressive metal
hardcore
metalcore
grindcore (and whatever other 'core' styles there are that i don't know about)
nu-metal
funk metal (and various other fusions)

not sure id agree on viking/death metal being grouped as the same thing though, death metal is usually a lot heavier. plus the whole cookie monster vocals. but then i havent heard a lot of death metal so i could be wrong there.
