no illmatic, dude, i understand that.

when i said 'not hip hop' it's just not indicitive of what it is, people cannot judge hip hop off those types of songs. You are right, completely, but you misunderstood me. I'm not on that backpacker shit.

That's not what hip hop is. They see that, they say 'wow hip hop is really shit and is bringing our society down'

they don't understand the lingo, don't understand the culture, they just do not have any fucking idea what they are talking about.

if someone said 'i despise rap - a tribe called quest and the like' i'd be more prone to actually believe that they know what they are talking about

unlike this retard that i just quoted.

No you misunderstood her. She said she hates rap. She never said she liked some of it, she just said she hates all sorts of rap.

What really annoys sometimes is when people ask me what sort of music do u listen to?

and i usually say 2 things:

1." i listen mainly to hiphop." and then this person will proceed to complain about how rap is garbage and stupid etc. I find this really unfair because 99% of the time, they will then use examples such as 50cent, black eyed peas etc. In this situation i usually just give up arguing.
Ok fair enough, that sort of stuff (hiphop if u want to call it that) sucks, but its not all what hiphop is about. If you want to trace hiphop culture and music to its roots, then by comparison, it definitely is not hiphop (even if the artists are black). You could say that the hiphop sound 'evolved/changed' to be crap, but personally i consider this type of stuff as pop. Obviously this sound is much more commercial, hence radio/tv will play this, and people form negative opinion on what they think is hiphop.

2. "i'm listening to that underground hiphop". this is sort of related to my first point, i find it sad that i have to label my taste as 'underground' now for people to understand. so they're like "oh, not that 50cent etc."

For the people that ignorantly criticise hiphop, i do hope that you will be open-minded enough to listen to many different artists, not just whats played on 96.1/video hits/mtv. just as i'm sure that there will be some wack artists in your genre.

For me, I love hiphop how its so versatile.
You got cats that can bust rhymes for 10+ minutes, constantly flipping similes, metaphors etc. and all sorts of rhymes. its about flowing in time with the beat and with rhythm, its about wordplay, about expressing yourself, switching styles and bringing energy to your music. This takes lots of skill, and theres some real intelligent dudes out there.

You got dudes that will sound straight up poetic in the way that they kick their verses. I never cared too much about the classical style of poetry, but to me, some hiphop is like poetry on a level that i can relate. just raw and simple.

You got producers that will use anything from grooveboxes, live instrumentation to film/tv/other music sampling. and i love how they put it all together on a track.

my opinion.

silly sailor, i couldnt of put that better myself, but what i say when ppl ask me what i listen to i say 'real hip hop'.. n they immediately think otherwise than the wack shit that gets played on tv/radio etc etc.. or ill juz name a few artists so they get the idea..

edit: i feel u hiphophooray123, sorry.. chris lol.. the majority of people that hate on hip hop judge on what they hear or see on tv/radio/top charts. they obviously havent taken the time 2 get a real understanding of what the real stuff is and learn more about it.. but for you ppl who judge hip hop by just hearing shit like 50 cent, g-unit and all that other shit thats been commercialised all over the place, u have no fucking clue what u are talking about.. thats like me looking at food, smelling it and saying 'NA THATS FUKD I DNT WANT IT', yet u havent even attempted to try it..

heres a good example.. who knows who that is in my avatar that hates on hip hop???

I must say, my most hated of all "music" right now is the shit The Strokes are putting out these days. The songs don't go anywhere! You sit around for 3+ minutes (an outrageous amount of time to do nothing, and it adds up with each following song), waiting, as the song seemingly builds, and builds... and builds, and then fizzles out into nothingness, leaving you bitterly disappointed and wanting your 3+ minutes back.

It's not so much the music itself that i hate (well, i do hate it, but there's more to it than that), it's the fact that everyone else seems to think it's the greatest musical creation since Master of Puppets (the greatest metal album of all time). THE STROKES ARE NOT GREAT!!! THEY'RE FUCKING SHIT!!!

OOOHHH!!! There's also the fact that no one ever seems to be able to tell me why The Strokes are so great. They just sit there, with vacant expressions on their faces, and say, "They're just, like, the best band ever! How can you not love them?" How can I not love them? The first step is to listen to their "music"...

I hate The Strokes so very, very much.

you know, sometimes you say something smart, but then other times you say some stupid shit like this stuff lol. i havent beeen here in ageeesssss but whenever i pop in i always catch you repeating the same old diatribe. youre always just labelling the shit that potentially makes hip hop look shit as "not hip hop" but then you hop on that backpacker shit and praise people like kweli etc etc as "true hip hop". what you gotta understand is that you need to accept that hip hop, like EVERY other genre of music has its shit, uncreative and uninspiring artists. you can't just brush off all uninspiring, uncreative hip hop acts as "not hip hop" simply because they make the genre look bad.

and another thing which a lot of people in this thread seem to think is that all music has to be some sort of abstract, meaningful and spiritual shit. does everything have to put you on some sort of plateau of enlightenment? why can't music be an avenue for having fun. how about something to chill out to, to have fun to, to dance to. does it always have to be something philosphical or "meaningful" to be seen as good music? and just because it doesn't fit the frames of "intelligent" why do you brush it off as tripe and bad? to do that is simply ignorant and is really putting music under some sort of shackles and limits.
Wow, everything in this post is what I was thinking.

As for music I hate, I hate Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. I might like it in the future, as I often find that I suddenly like something I used to hate, but right now it's the most boring shit ever.

Oh, and The Strokes first album is boring as fuck. I don't know anything about their third album but everybody goes apeshit over their first. Why?

If you post about something you truly detest, someone will be besotted with it and naturally get defensive.
If you mention something you like, someone will hate it and immediatly begin to talk whatever trash they can come up with about it.

I listen to a mixture of all sorts of things.
I'm not too fond of some of the rap thats coming out of America at the moment, PERSONALLY. I'm more fond of the classic stuff that came out in the late 80's early 90's, that sort of thing.

Some pop has me a little irked aswell. Simply because I'm sick of hearing the same songs to different music. Theres alot of this 'OMFG, MY BOYFRIEND LEFT ME, MY LIFE IS OVER, I WATCH AS MY HEART SINKS SLOWLY INTO SHADOWS AND I VOW NEVER ENDING REVENGE BY TRASHING YOUR HOUSE AND TELLING YOUR GIRLFRIEND YOU HAVE A SMALL PENIS AND THEN GOING OUT WITH THE CAPTAIN OF THE FOOTBALL TEAM OR A NERD WHO IS LYK SO MUCH BETTER THAN YOU EVER WERE!!!!!'
Seriously...there must be SOMETHING else people can sing about. That sort of thing may be a popular topic amongst some music lovers..but I'm rather over it.

The Killers are NOT pop! They're indie. or "Alternative & Punk" as they classify themselves.
Ah I love them.

I really dislike 50 cent.
