Obviously in colloquial Japanese the term applies to non-Japanese (specifically westerners, one of which jogloran is not :p) but the formal (and more appropriate meaning) is still "one from a foreign place", rather than one of a specific background.
You're talking about gaikokujin. From where I come from, Gaijin = Western Imperialist.

You are from Japan, right? ;)

That nuance is, sadly lost on us. And here I was thinking it was just a marker of exclusivity...

No, check your koujien. Gaijin's primary meaning is still "foreigner". What you are talking about is colloquial Japanese meaning, not standard meaning.

It's a colloquial form of owatte sugimashita, and should have been owatchatta.

Basically, it was short one mora (syllabic unit), the small tsu which doubles the consonant in "cha". Takuya was excessively nitpicking. :p

Anyway, we're arguing a higher cause now :)

It's owatteshimatta... I wasn't laughing about the Romaji spelling. I couldn't tell the difference because Romaji is bogus.

Never mind though... :p It's OK.

Indeed, to err is but human. Thanks for the heads up.

For some reason I mentally switched from "~te shimau" to "~te sugiru" in conjugation. Oops! :p

ahhhhh even my 'correction' was wrong! Indeed, ~ is the shortened version of the plain form, which is ~Ă܂

I suppose me using ~ only further strengthens Takuya's argument against textbook japanese, right? But like Lexi said, I've seen enough engrish in your posts Takuya. So play nice :p

er..I agree with you that gaijin shouldn't (really) be used in the australian/aborigine context, tho we must remember that 'jap' is not always used in aus as an insult, often as an abbreviation..like some ppl call ppl from HK honkies or filipinos/filipinas filos... :)

yup u would.. in japan, ppl can often see a difference between other foreigners, except for SOME filipinas/filipinos (but moreso the girls..) who would definitely pass as japanese...
